STUNNING LEGION FIGHTBACK STUNS GNOSALL’S HORNS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Defending champions NRBL A came from 0-3 down at home to seal a draw against arch rivals Horns B in a heated clash between the top two teams in the Newport & District Pool League.

The result means that the pair is still only separated by frame difference after 21 of the league’s 34 matches. George Allen put the visitors in front with a close win over Andy Miles and, when Darren Pountney went in-off in his frame against Mick Manning, the Market Drayton player made no mistake to make it 0-2. Colin Pink made it 0-3 with a comfortable rack win over Ant Heathcote, but Wayne Dodd led the fight back after Neil Dale had failed to capitalise on two shots.

Heathcote and Pountney continued the resurgence with a win over Dale and Pink and Miles and Dodd sealed the unlikely draw after Allen had missed a black into the middle pocket to win the match.

Third met sixth in the match between King’s Head A and Sutherland Arms and the home side prevailed, 4-2, to continue their climb up the table.

The Plate-chasing Railway Tavern hosted their pub rivals and cup winners LSC at Upper Bar and soon found themselves 0-4 down. Greg Heathcote, Paul Cartledge, Paul Trevor and John Williams did the damage in four singles racks against Adam Stone, Greg Quinn, Russ Porter and Stu Morrey, although the ‘home’ side won both doubles racks. LSC now move up to third in the table.

NRBL B returned to winning ways with a 2-4 victory over Horns A in Gnosall. The away side won all the singles frames to seal both points.

Shakespeare A avenged their cup semi-final defeat by Junction A with 4-2 win and they now remain unbeaten at the ‘cauldron’ since early November. Richard Hendy set the Shake on their way with a seven-ball first frame win and Andy Potter, Ben Holmes and Ross Richards-Jones kept up the good work.

The Navigation hosted the Barley Mow in Gnosall and honours were shared and there was a similar 3-3 score line in the match between Plate leaders Junction B and Shakespeare B.

The Wheatsheaf travelled to the Haberdashers in Knighton and lost out by the odd frame. Lowly King’s Head B entertained the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the evening at Chetwynd End and the match ended all square.
