HORNS GNOSALL EDGE EVER CLOSER TO NRBL A IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A and Horns Gnosall B faced ‘straightforward’ matches against two lower sides as they continued their dogfight at the top of the Newport & District Pool League.

But NRBL A, the defending champions, made hard work of beating the Royal Navy Club and unbeaten Horns B got the better of Norbury’s Junction B in Gnosall.

Dennis Holland left NRBL A skipper Mick Beech shell shocked in rack one at Bellman’s Yard and, despite the fact that Wayne Dodd seven-balled Alan Pritchett to level the score, Andy Miles was humiliated for the third successive week – this time by left-hander Mark Kijuk. Ant Heathcote got the better of veteran Gerry Nunn to put the Legion back on track and the title-holders prevailed in both doubles racks.

Neil Dale, George Allen, Colin Pink and Mick Manning steam-rollered Horns B into a 4-0 lead, but Allen and Pink lost to Mick Ashforth and Steve Blakemore, as the visitors gained a consolation sixth frame.

King’s Head A kept up the pressure with a 5-1 win over the Navigation but NRBL B were stunned by a shock 2-4 home defeat to the Haberdashers Arms. Liam Matthews gained the upper hand over James Morris to put the home team in front, but Vicky Winter ousted Jack Jones in a tactical frame, only for Mike Jones to put the home team in the driving seat again.

Under-rated Dave Heeley got the better of Simon Walley to level the match and the visitors dug deep to snatch both doubles racks to confirm a stunning win. Sadly, a motorcycle belonging to one of the visiting side was stolen – and later retrieved damaged – from outside the Legion during the match.

Fifth met seventh in the clash between LSC and Shakespeare A and Greg Heathcote and Paul Trevor got the better of Richard Hendy and Andy Potter to make it 2-0. Neil Perkins edged a scrappy encounter with Paul Cartledge to give the away side a chance, but a useful John Williams clearance against Ross Richards-Jones was enough for 3-1.

Heathcote almost sealed the win with a missed black in an attempted seven-ball clearance against Potter and Ben Holmes in rack five. Cartledge eventually wrapped up the points with the final pot, but Perkins teamed up with Hendy and earned another consolation frame for the visitors in rack six against Trevor and Williams.

The Sutherland Arms marched ever closer to the top five with a 1-5 win at the Wheatsheaf and Junction A beat Horns A, 4-2, in the all-Staffordshire clash in Norbury.

The Barley Mow got back on track with a comfortable 5-1 win against King’s Head B. Ant Winfield, Ray Talbot and Billy Holland won three of the singles frames against Lucy Hennessey, Tash Pugh and Lyn Day, but Chris Perry stunned Martin Porter to pull a frame back. Gary Bolton joined the challenge in rack five, as the Barley clinched both doubles frames.

Both the Shakespeare B and Railway Tavern are targeting the Newport Plate trophy and honours went to the home side on this occasion. Russ Woodhouse and Darren Lowe beat Adam Stone and Stu Morrey to make it 2-0 and, despite Dave Bristow beating Jess Hilditch in frame three, Kim Rigby threw egg in Greg Quinn’s face in frame four to make it 3-1. Woodhouse and Hilditch sealed the points in frame five, although Quinn and Morrey won the final frame for the away side.

The final and third place play-off for the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy will take place next Wednesday evening (April 17th) from 19.30hrs at the Royal Navy Club. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served between the two matches. Horns Gnosall B and Shakespeare A will decide the third place match and LSC at the Tav will take on Junction A in the final.
