NRBL CRUSH JUNCTION B TO STAY ON TOP IN NEWPORT POOL

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A maintained their lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League after crushing Junction B, 6-0, on Wednesday night.

Horns B remain second after facing a tricky home clash against the Sutherland Arms in Gnosall. They came away with both points despite dropping two frames: K. Moore gave the visitors a dream start against Mick Manning, before the barrage of Neil Dale, Colin Pink and George Allen made it 3-1. Moore and Ian Swinnerton pulled a frame back for the villagers in rack five to set up a tense finale, but Pink and ‘bogeyman’ Dean Smith held their nerve to seal the two points.

Third-placed NRBL B visited LSC at the Tav without skipper Jack Jones and with Australia-bound Luke Jones with his mind on other things. Rob Holt and Luke Jones put the away side into a stunning 0-2 lead with wins over Greg Beefcote and John Williams, only for Paul Trevor to pull a frame back for LSC. Simon Walley got the better of Ben Longstaff to make it 1-3 and the away side stunned the Tavern quartet with wins in the doubles racks.

Barley Mow, meanwhile, continued their good run with a comfortable 5-1 win over Gnosall’s Horns A, with Gary Bolton, Ray Talbot, Ant Winfield and Martin Porter shining brightly for the Newport side in the singles racks against Martin Holford, Dean Burrows, Charles Minors and Martin Hall. Winfield and Kim Wan Loi lost a consolation doubles rack to Minors and Hall.

Shakespeare A visited the Navigation in Gnosall and honours were shared in a tight match. Richard Hendy got the better of Neil Holford to put the visitors into the lead, but Dave Marshall succumbed in frame two. Home landlord Steve Whitlock won a safety marathon against Neil Perkins to put the home team in front, only for Andy Potter to oust Scott Smith and level the match. Honours were shared in the doubles with Holford and Hendy shining for their respective teams in two scrappy frames.

The Railway Tavern returned to winning ways with a 1-5 victory over King’s Head B. Dave Bristow seven-balled Maggie O-Brien and Stu Morrey rode his luck to make it 0-2. Ian Perry pulled a frame back against Adam Stone to make it 1-2 and Greg Quinn sealed at least a draw for the away side. Russ Porter joined the party in the doubles, despite doing his best to ruin the score line for the away team.

Shakespeare B ended a poor run of form with a 4-2 win over the Wheatsheaf at Upper Bar. Russ Woodhouse saw off Al Harvey, only for Mark Hodgkinson to level the match with a rare win over a gutted Darren Lowe. Lauren Heathcote’s and Jess Hilditch’s wins over Nigel Sandbrook and Paul Skitt made it 3-1 to the home side and honours were shared in the doubles.

Junction A hosted King’s Head A in Norbury and the away side won the match with the loss of two frames and Knighton’s Haberdashers visited the Royal Navy Club in the final match of the evening and the match ended all square.

There are two matches to go before the first half of the season reaches a conclusion and the bottom eight also enter a ‘second’ division for the ‘Numpty Cup’. With four points still at stake, Railway Tavern, Navigation and Shakespeare B lie within a point of each other with the cut-off approaching for the bottom eight sides in the division.
