NRBL A EDGE TWO POINTS CLEAR AS HORNS B FALTER

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A returned to the scene of their Neil Clark Memorial Trophy quarter-final defeat to exact league revenge on the Railway Tavern and maintain their lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League.

But it was a close call for the defending champions and it took a Wayne Dodd clearance in the sixth frame to settle the match after Greg Quinn had potted a sensational double in the fifth rack against Darren Pountney and Ant Heathcote to give the home side a lifeline.

Horns Gnosall B survived the challenge of playing on the Wheatsheaf cloth to maintain their challenge but slipped two points behind the defending champions after a 3-3 draw in Chetwynd Aston. Honours were shared in the singles and doubles racks, with Nigel Sandbrook and Paul Skitt unsettling George Allen and Neil Dale, but Colin Pink and Mick Manning redeeming the Gnosall side.

NRBL B hosted the out-of-form Shakespeare B at Newport Legion and whitewashed their opponents. After Rob Holt had beaten Russ Woodhouse it was downhill for the away side, although Jess Hilditch played well for the visitors.

King’s Head A returned to winning ways with a 5-1 win over Junction B, while sixth-placed Junction A entertained fifth-placed LSC at the Tav in what could still be a dress rehearsal for the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy final.

Greg Heathcote, John Wiliams and Paul Trevor gave the visitors a perfect start against Sion Richards, Keith Rogers and Hyla Marklew, but Steve Roycroft got the better of Ben Longstaff before the away side won both doubles frames to seal the two points.

Sutherland Arms continued their march up the table with a 5-1 win over the Royal Navy Club and the Barley Mow’s revellers visited the Haberdashers Arms in Knighton and came away with a 2-4 win with Martin Porter continuing his unbeaten start to the season after a personal 10 singles frames played.

Shakespeare A claimed all three points with a 5-1 win over bottom club King’s Head B at Upper Bar. Andy Potter, Dave Marshall, Neil Perkins and Richard Hendy sealed the points in four scrappy frames against Lucy Hennessey, Maggie O’Brien, Lyn Day and Jamie James but honours were shared in the doubles frames, with Day confirming a consolation sixth frame against Marshall and Ross Richards-Jones.

Horns A hosted the Navigation in an all-Gnosall clash to round off the evening’s proceedings and the away aide dropped just one frame after a comfortable win.
