CURRENT POOL LEAGUE LEADERS NRBL A
OVERCOME HABERDASHERS POWER SURGE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): On a night when a power cut threatened to ruin several matches in the Newport & District Pool League, NRBL A continued their consistent league form to remain out in front after a tense 4-2 home victory against the Haberdashers from Knighton.
Andy Miles and Mick Beech set the home team on their way with wins over Sarah Holland and Rich Bayliss, but Wayne Dodd lost to Dave Heeley after potting the black halfway through his frame. Ant Heathcote got the better of Mike Caswell to make it 3-1, but an out-of-sorts Darren Pountney and Mick Beech lost out to Vicky Winter and Bayliss, as the Knighton side rallied. Heathcote and Miles redeemed the situation for the home side in a nervy sixth frame.
Former league leaders Horns B entertained fellow Neil Clark Memorial Trophy semi-finalists LSC at the Tavern in Gnosall and threw away a 3-1 lead to their Newport rivals. The match ended all square but the teams will meet again in the cup semi-final at the Shakespeare on March 6th.
The Barley Mow had a chance to move into the top four when they hosted rivals NRBL B in the High Street, but the league newcomers were stunned by the league’s most improved side. Rob Holt and Jack Jones played well to oust Gary Bolton and Ray Talbot but home skipper Martin Porter redressed the balance against Mike Jones.
Simon Walley’s win over Ashley Vaughan sealed at least a draw for the away side but Holt and Mike Jones sealed the two points in rack six after Jack and Luke Jones had lost out to Talbot and Porter in frame five.
After being knocked out of the cup in Norbury last week, it was imperative that King’s Head A returned to winning ways against the Shakespeare B team. They did so with the loss of just one frame, but that rack was gifted to Russ Woodhouse by the previously unbeaten Graham Tigwell.
Despite the set-back, Irene Whittington got the better of Darren Lowe to level the match and Mick Collins beat Jess Hilditch, but not before the youngster had attempted a superb seven-ball clearance and missed out on the final black. Ed Keenan sealed at least a draw for the away side against Kim Rigby and the Chetwynd End outfit prevailed in both doubles racks, with Phil Emery and Ross Goodchild joining the party in rack five.
Shakespeare A literally crossed the road to visit the Railway Tavern in a crucial mid-table clash at Upper Bar and honours were shared in a scrappy encounter. Stu Morrey potted the black and one of Neil Perkins’s last two yellows to gift the first rapid-fire frame to the away player, but Adam Stone persevered to get the better of Andy Potter to level the match. Richard Hendy was in useful potting form to oust Dave Bristow to make it 1-2, but Jason Lloyd turned up the heat on Ross Richards-Jones to level the score.
Greg Quinn came to the Tavern’s rescue with Stu Morrey with a fifth frame win over Potter and Ben Holmes, but Hendy and Perkins held their nerve in the final frame to seal the deserved draw,
Junction A visited the Royal Navy Club in Bellman’s Yard and began their preparations for the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy semi-final showdown with Shakespeare A by whitewashing their opposition.
Bottom side King’s Head B hosted the Sutherland Arms at Chetwynd End and won only one frame on the night. Honours were shared when the Wheatsheaf travelled to Gnosall to play the Navigation and Junction B hosted Horns A in an all-Staffordshire clash in the final match of the evening and prevailed by the odd frame.
