HORNS GNOSALL B KEEP PRESSURE ON LEGION A IN POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B maintained the pressure on NRBL A at the top of the Newport & District Pool League with a controversial 1-5 victory at Shakespeare B on Wednesday night.

Russ Woodhouse set the home team off to the perfect start with a win over Colin Pink, but it went downhill from then on for Shakespeare B. Mick Manning got the better of Darren Lowe and then George Allen stepped up to the table – out of turn – and began to play against Lauren Heathcote.

After a few minutes people realised that Neil Dale, the Newport open champion, should have been playing and a ‘phone call to the league coordinator settled a heated dispute and the balls were re-racked with Dale eventually putting the Horns 1-2 ahead. George Allen beat Kim Rigby to make it 1-3 and the away side prevailed in both doubles frames,

NRBL A also gained two points with an impressive 1-5 away victory at the Sutherland Arms in Tibberton and remain a point clear of their Gnosall rivals. Andy Miles piped Kevin Moore to make it 0-1, but Jack Hooper stunned Mick Beech and levelled the match. Wayne Dodd and Ant Heathcote surged throughTrevor and Colin Smith to make it 1-3 and the away side won both doubles matches to seal both points.

NRBL B bounced back from a first league defeat of the season last week to snatch both points against the Navigation at Newport Legion. Rob Holt squeezed through against Geoff Arrowsmith to put the home side in front and Jack Jones made it 2-0 with a seven-ball clearance. Mike Jones settled the home side’s nerves with a cool third frame win and Simon Walley scraped through rack four to seal the points, although the Gnosall side prevailed in both doubles frames.

King’s Head A hosted Shakespeare A, who arrived at Chetwynd End unbeaten in seven games. But the former cup winners gave the Shake a potting lesson: Graham Tigwell kept up his unbeaten run in frame one and Ed Keenan make it 2-0 to the home side.

When Dave Marshall potted the black and tapped Mick Collins’s yellow into the corner pocket at the same time the writing was on the wall for the away side and Ben Holmes’s miss on a straight black in frame four against Ross Goodchild capped a miserable evening for the visitors. Honours were shared in two scrappy doubles frames, with Irene Whittington, Phil Emery, Andy Potter and Marshall getting their names on the score sheet.

The Barley Mow faced a tricky visit to the Junction A at Norbury and honours were shared in a tense match. “It felt that we had been robbed,” quipped a Junction spokesman.

LSC at the Tav returned to winning ways with a comfortable 4-2 victory over the Royal Navy Club. The home side won all four singles racks, courtesy of Greg Heathcote, Paul Trevor, Ian Roberts and John Williams, but took their foot off the gas in the doubles as the visitors prevailed.

The Railway Tavern visited lowly Horns A in Gnosall and were stunned by the Staffordshire players. Away skipper Stu Morrey dropped himself from the singles racks and could only watch in disbelief as Martin Holford, Charles Minors, Dai Smith and Jake Anstey stormed into a 4-0 lead with wins over Greg Quinn, Adam Stone, Russ Porter and David \Bristow, Morrey regrouped the team in the doubles, but Dai Smith had already begun rampant celebrations.

Haberdashers hosted Junction B in Knighton and the home side prevailed by the odd frame. The Wheatsheaf entertained King’s Head B in the final match of the night at Chetwynd Aston and the match also finished all square.

NRBL A regained top spot after demolishing their B team with the loss of just one frame. Still smarting after his embarrassment against the Wheatsheaf, Andy Miles began the rout by beating Rob Holt in frame one and it was one-way traffic for the defending champions, although the B team managed to scrape a consolation in the doubles.
