U-1 SPIRIT OF QATAR’S VILLWOCK FACES
STIFF TEST AT THE SAN DIEGO BAYFAIR

· Villwock aims to overturn 197-point National High Points deficit
· San Diego action starts with practice and qualifying on Friday

SAN DIEGO (USA): U-1 Spirit of Qatar’s Dave Villwock faces a tough challenge at this weekend’s San Diego Bayfair, round five of the 2012 Air National Guard H1 Hydroplane Series, if he is to overturn the 197-point deficit by which he currently trails U-6’s Steve David in the National High Points standings.

The Washington State driver is the defending National High Points champion and looked to be in cruise control to retain his title before the recent Seattle Seafair on Lake Washington.

Bad luck and a couple of results that did not go his way enabled Florida-based David to sneak into the lead heading to San Diego this weekend. Villwock will be mindful that he needs to overturn the deficit on Mission Bay before the H1 caravan heads to Qatar for the final round at the Oryx Cup World Championship in January 2013.

Villwock won the San Diego race last season in U-96 Spirit of Qatar and the Ellstrom Racing hydroplane racer – who runs with the backing of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) and president Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani – will be more determined than ever to succeed in California when action starts with practice and qualifying on Friday afternoon.

While David is sure to be Villwock’s closest rival, Jimmy Shane is within striking distance of the leading duo at the helm of U-5 Graham Trucking and a good result for J. Michael Kelly would lift him into contention with U-37. Further down the entry list, Tom Thompson comes in to replace the injured J.W. Myers in U-11 Miss Peters & May.

The first of the race heats will take place on Saturday and the bulk of the action will get underway on the 2.5-mile Mission Bay course on Sunday, with heats two and three and the final, scheduled for 17.00hrs (PCT).
