QUINN SEES OFF SMITH TO ENTER NEWPORT POOL QUARTERS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Standford Bridge-based Greg Quinn booked his place in the quarterfinals of the Danfords Motor Auction Newport Pool Open with a convincing 3-0 win over an out-of-form Dean Smith. The match was rescheduled for Tuesday night at the 11th hour and Quinn settled better of the two players and stormed into a 1-0 lead.

Smith regrouped and had his chance to steal rack two, but he sent the cue ball into a corner pocket and Quinn bided his time well, avoiding a potential clearance with his first visit to lay Smith in an impossible snooker. He made sure with his second set of two shots and Stafford’s Smith was on the rack.

Smith started well in rack three and had his chance to steal the frame when Quinn missed a nervous black. But, rather than play a safety shot behind his remaining red, Smith went for glory and the white feel free and left Quinn with a tricky long pot and a chance to confirm the match.

“There was a lot of ‘yak yak yak’ on Facebook before the game about the potential result, but I just got done to doing the business,” quipped Quinn, who suffered the ignominy of a car breakdown on the way to the match.

All third round singles matches must be completed before the quarterfinal draw on Tuesday, September 18th and doubles matches must be finished by September 24th. Results should be sent by text to 07831 123153.
