PINK AND HEATHCOTE DRAW MILES
AND TAPHOUSE IN POOL QUARTERS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Twice former champion Colin Pink and one-time champion Antony Heathcote have drawn LSC league player Andy Miles and the NRBL’s Jason Taphouse in the last 16 of the Danfords Motor Auctions Newport Pool Open.
Other ties of note feature Dean Smith – the people’s champion – against Greg Quinn and an all-King’s Head clash between Trevor Smith and Graham Tigwell.
The pick of the quarterfinal ties in the Shakespeare Newport Pool Doubles Open is the match between Stafford’s Dean Smith and Will Edge and Market Drayton’s George Allen and former champion Mick Manning.
Luke Jones continued his run of good form to eliminate Tavern landlord Jon Auliffe in straight frames at Upper Bar and book his place in the last 16 draw for the Danfords Motor Auctions Newport Pool Open with a singles tie against Stafford fishery owner Neil Dale.
Andy Miles and Neil Perkins scraped through a two-hour battle against Ant Heathcote and Mick Beech to reach the quarterfinals of the Shakespeare Newport Doubles Open. Miles missed a black in rack one which would have put the LSC duo in front and Heathcote stepped in to clear.
A Beech safety error in a marathon second frame enabled Miles to clear his remaining balls to level the match and Perkins nipped a tight black into the corner in a tight rack three to put him and Miles in front.
The fourth frame was another grueller until Perkins seized an unlikely opportunity to clear his remaining five reds. He potted them all and fell nicely on the black, only to see the match-winning ball clip the middle pocket and run safe. A period of safety play ensued before Beech capitalised on a Miles foul from a snooker to clear the table and make it 2-2.
Miles broke off in rack five and the advantage immediately swung to the opposition. But Perkins and Miles benefited from a couple of good safety shots and, when Heathcote left his run up behind a ball too short, Miles stepped in with his two shots to seal a nervy clearance and the match. The Newport duo will now meet Stafford’s Neil Dale and Brendan Ruttledge in the quarterfinals.
King’s Head league players Irene Whittington and Phil Emery were given a scare by the Wheatsheaf’s Nigel Sandbrook and Mark Hodgskinson. The ‘Sheaf pair snatched a scrappy first frame and had their chances to win the second and storm into a 2-0 lead.
But Emery and Whittington hit back to level and cruised through the third. The fourth was evenly matched until Whittington made a brave attempt to seal the match. She potted the first yellow and ran slightly out of position on the next. But the ball fell into the pocket and a stunning black along the length of the cushion sealed the contest for the King’s Head duo, who now meet the winners of the match between Tigwell/Ross Goodchild and Jack Jones/Andy Lycett.
Irene Whittington lost the first frame to an inspired Laura Brennan in the outstanding quarterfinal of the Railway Tavern Newport Pool Open, but the rack jolted the two-time former champion into action and she won the next three frames to book her place in the semi-finals and a match against Lorna Phee.
All third round singles matches must be completed before the quarterfinal draw on Tuesday, September 18th and doubles matches must be finished by September 24th. The semi-final draws for both competitions will take place on Tuesday, September 25th. Results should be sent by text to 07831 123153.
