FORMER MARKET DRAYTON DOUBLES PARTNERS
SET FOR NEWPORT POOL OPEN DOUBLES CLASH
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The second round draw of the Danfords Motor Auction Newport Pool Open sees eight players progress to round three with byes and 16 play best-of-five matches to old EPA rules.
The two picks of the latest draw are the doubles tie between defending Open champion Colin Pink and inaugural singles’ champion Paul Trevor and Market Drayton’s in-form George ‘Gerry’ Allen and Mick Manning and former England contenders Darren Pountney and Wayne Dodd in the singles competition.
Jack Jones delayed a night fishing session to take on Aqueduct’s Charlie Hayward at the Railway Tavern in his round one match and the youngster edged into a 1-0 lead. But Hayward hit back quickly to level the match and won the next two to leave the Newport cue with a dry net.
Hayward’s son Luke took on Gary Bolton in a second game at the Tavern and stormed into a 2-0 lead after some patchy Bolton play. The Newport-based Manchester player hit back in frame three but one slack shot in frame four was enough for Hayward to develop a useful clearance to seal his place in the last 24.
Wayne Dodd stunned Ed Keenan in straight frames at the King’s Head. The NRBL builder delivered a great performance and left Lilleshall cricketer Keenan stumped as to how it had all gone go badly wrong.
Former champion Ant Heathcote admitted to pre-match nerves against Stafford’s Will Edge, but he started well and developed a 2-1 lead into a 3-1 win to cruise into round two. Tavern landlord Jon Auliffe beat Navigation landlord Steve Whitlock, 1-3, in a scrappy final match of the round.
Gary Bolton was forced to cede his doubles match against Nigel Sandbrook and Mark Hodgskinson when AWOL partner Dan McLaughlin was delayed in a traffic jam on his way back from pre-season training at Anfield.
Cheswardine’s Simon Walley and Auliffe came from 0-2 down against former champions Ian and Bob Perry to win the next three frames and book their places in the last 16 of the Shakespeare Newport Doubles Open.
Andy Miles and Neil Perkins needed four frames to overcome Andy Potter and Dave Marshall, with Potter levelling the match at 1-1 with a clearance when Miles went ‘in-off’ from the break. But the LSC duo prevailed in the next two tight frames to book their place in the last 16.
Newport’s Martin Porter and Greg Heathcote coasted into a 1-0 lead against Stafford’s Kevin Moore and Dan Haynes, but Haynes levelled the match with a useful clearance in rack two. The local duo moved ahead again in the third before being pegged back and, when Heathcote missed his position on the final black by less than an inch, Moore held his nerve to make an unlikely clearance and seal a last 16 place.
Mick Collins and Ed Keenan somehow lost to Stafford’s Neil Dale and Brendan Ruttledge. Keenan was in sensational potting form to put the King’s Head side into a rapid-fire 2-0 lead and he jawed the black to potentially whitewash the visitors in the third. Somehow Dale and Ruttledge clawed their way back into contention by winning the next two and they sealed an unlikely win in frame five in a thrilling encounter.
Lauren Heathcote stormed into a 1-0 lead against Chris Perry in the Railway Tavern Newport Women’s Open, but was pegged back to 2-2 and won the match in the deciding frame. Woodseaves-based Vicky Winter secured her place in the last six with a 3-0 win over Newport’s Lucy Hennessey.
All second round matches must be completed by Monday, August 27th and results should be sent by text to 07831 123153.
