MORREY AND WOODHOUSE LEAD SEVEN PLAYERS INTO ROUND
TWO OF DANFORDS MOTOR AUCTION NEWPORT POOL OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Stuart Morrey, Russ Woodhouse, Ian Perry, Dean Smith, Darren Pountney, Ben Holmes and Simon Walley were the first seven players to safely negotiate the first round of the 2012 Danfords Motor Auction Newport Pool Open and reach the last 24.
An in-form Woodhouse came back from the dead in frame one to stun Greg Heathcote in three straight frames, while Morrey disposed of a determined Jamie James in four frames to book his name in the second round draw on July 31st.
Elsewhere, Smith overcame Paul Skitt at the King’s Head in four frames and Ian Perry survived an early scare against the Wheatsheaf’s Al Harvey to reach round two.
Simon Walley played well against Ian Roberts to beat the former Tavern landlord and Open sponsor Ian Roberts in four frames. Meanwhile, Shakespeare landlord Ben Holmes dropped frame one to a stunning Darren Lowe pot on the black, but recovered to win the match, 3-1.
Lilleshall Hall golf captain and snooker player Darren Pountney was staring down the barrel against Andy Potter at Newport Legion, with the Shake player having a chance to win the match at 1-2. But Pountney dug in well to clinch the tie in the decider with some dogged safety play.
Newport-based Dean Smith and Stafford partner Will Edge beat Telford league players Kevin Genner and Chris Nolan without the loss of a frame in the first match of the Shakespeare Newport Pool Doubles Open tournament last Sunday afternoon.
Defending doubles champion Colin Pink teamed up with Paul Trevor for the first time and the pair suffered a major scare against Greg Quinn and Andy Drew Richardson. Quinn cleared well to put the Tavern duo into a 0-1 lead and the pair had a chance to make it 0-2 before Pink hit back with an excellent clearance. The Hinstock player did the same again to make it 2-1 to the ‘away’ side and, when Quinn missed a black to level the match, Trevor contributed with a simple black to seal the match.
Last year’s beaten semi-finalists, Irene Whittington and Phil Emery, won 3-0 against Lyn Day and Ray Rogers, but the first two frames went to the black in a tense match.
Ross Goodchild potted the black by mistake in his doubles match with Graham Tigwell against Jane and Jess Hilditch, but the King’s Head duo won frames one, two and four to seal their match.
Defending champion Irene Whittington drew first blood by defeating Jane Hilditch in straight frames in round one of the Railway Tavern Newport Women’s Open.
All first round games must be completed by Tuesday, July 31st and results should be sent by text to 07831 123153.
