NRBL A CRUSH KING’S HEAD B AS LSC MAINTAIN SECOND
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A were in cruise control in their 25th match of the Newport & District Pool League against lowly King’s Head B. The runaway league leaders remained on course for the title after an emphatic 6-0 win, despite the presence of Newport Open runner-up Ian Perry in the home side.
NRBL skipper Mick Beech took just under an hour to dispose of Perry, who was getting some practice in before the start of the 2012 singles’ competition. Jason Taphouse and Antony Heathcote got the better of Maggie O’Brien and Chris Perry to make it 0-3 and Wayne Dodd beat Lucy Hennessey to seal all three points. The Legion quartet prevailed in both doubles frames to confirm the rout.
LSC at the Tav travelled to the Plough in Woodseaves and returned with all three points after a tense 2-4 win. Greg Heathcote survived by the skin of his teeth against Vicky Winter to make it 0-1 and Andy Miles got the better of Kirk Robinson to make it 0-2.
Vicky Hipkins took Neil Perkins all the way to her last two balls in frame three, as the visitors made it 0-3, but James Morris capitalised on an Ian Roberts foul to pull a frame back. Heathcote sealed the three points in rack five, but Hipkins got her just rewards with a consolation sixth frame win against Miles and Roberts.
King’s Head A suffered a severe setback with a 3-3 draw against a stubborn NRBL B side, with the home team squandering a 3-0 lead.
The Sutherland Arms were made to work hard for a 3-3 draw against the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston. Nigel Sandbrook and Al Harvey beat Jack Hooper and Gary Bolton to make it 2-0 to the home side but Simon Walley’s defeat by Colin Smith sent home skipper Mark Hodgkinson’s ticker into overdrive.
Paul Skitt prevailed over Matt Mansell to edge the ‘Sheaf closer to the promised land, but Walley and Sandbrook lost out to Hooper and Tom Fisken and Mansell and Smith sealed an unlikely draw for last year’s runners-up.
Junction A visited the Shakespeare in an important clash between the sides ranked fifth and sixth in the table and it was the home team who romped into a 4-0 lead.
Andy Potter, Dan Brennan, Ross Richards-Jones and Ben Holmes sealed the three points with wins over Sion Richards, Keith Rogers, Steve Roycroft and Hyla Marklew, but Gordon Sidebottom joined the action with Rogers to pull a frame back and Richards and Steve Horton restored the Junction’s pride with a win in the final frame.
The Navigation earned three much-needed points with a 5-1 win against the Newport Arms Hotel in Gnosall and the Railway Tavern closed on the leading group after beating the Royal Navy Club, 4-2, at Upper Bar. Junction B entertained the Horns in an all-Staffordshire clash at Norbury, but the visitors sealed all three points in the final match of the night.
LSC were made to work hard for a tense victory over the Wheatsheaf in their game in hand last Friday at a packed Tavern. Greg Heathcote struggled to overcome Harvey in frame one, but an ambitious black double by Perkins in frame two ended with the white going in as well and Skitt levelled the match.
Walley saw off Ian Roberts with an element of good fortune to put the visitors into a 1-2 lead, but Miles held his nerve against Sandbrook to level the match again. Miles and Roberts clinched rack five to put the home team in sight of the winning post and Perkins teamed up with Heathcote and made a useful five-ball clearance in rack six to clinch the three points.
