NRBL A MARCH ON AS NEWPORT
ARMS HOTEL STUN LSC AT THE TAV
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A and King’s Head A both earned maximum points in the Newport & District Pool League on a night when the Newport Arms Hotel stunned second-placed LSC at the Tav.
The Newport Legion side put one hand firmly on the league trophy with a 6-0 rout of the Wheatsheaf and extended their lead over LSC to six points with eight games remaining.
LSC were firm favourites to keep up the pressure with a win over the all-girls Newport Arms Hotel side, but it was the female cue women who came away smiling. Volatile Greg Heathcote lived through his worst nightmare to lose to his sister Lauren in frame one, but Andy Miles redressed the balance on a woeful cloth against Jess Hilditch in frame two.
Neil Perkins survived another banana skin against Jane Hilditch to make it 1-2 to the visitors, but an Ian Roberts in-off late on helped Kim Rigby level the score. Lauren Heathcote rode her luck again in rack five to snatch a priceless frame win, but Miles held his nerve in the final frame to stave off an LSC humiliation.
“When someone told me that I had as much chance of winning as juggling soot outside Tuckers, I knew I had to go for it,” said an ecstatic Lauren Heathcote.
King’s Head A maintained the pressure with a 6-0 win over the Plough at Woodseaves in the absence of skipper Mick Collins and dejected Birmingham City fan Ian Perry. Graham Tigwell, Ross Goodchild, Irene Whittington and Jamie James sealed all three points in the singles frames and there was no way back for the villagers in the doubles racks.
The tie of the week featured a contest between fifth-placed Junction A and sixth-placed Sutherland Arms at Norbury. All three points went to the visitors, with Tom Fisken and Jack Hooper taking the first two racks before the Junction side pulled the match back to 2-2. The villagers won both doubles frames to keep the pressure on the leading trio.
The Horns entertained the Shakespeare in Gnosall, but the visitors came away smiling with a 2-4 win. Stafford legend Dean Smith pipped Jake Anstey to make it 0-1, but former Welsh champion Dai Smith levelled the score against Ross Richards-Jones. Laura Brennan and Ben Holmes played well to win the next two frames against Steve Bullock and Charles Minors and honours were shared in the doubles frames.
The Railway Tavern claimed three points with a 5-1 win over the Junction B. Adam Stone, landlord Jon Auliffe, Dave Bristow and Greg Quinn did the damage in the singles racks, but Dave Owen and Rich Morris pulled one frame back in the doubles, only for Andy Richardson to join the party with Stone in rack six to complete the rout.
NRBL B travelled to the Navigation in Gnosall and succumbed by the odd frame and the Royal Navy Club hosted bottom side King’s Head B at Bellman’s Yard and dropped just one frame.
Honours were shared in the rearranged top-of-the-table clash between NRBL A and King’s Head A. Graham Tigwell seven-balled Mick Beech to put the visitors in the driving seat and Mick Collins got the better of Antony Heathcote. But an expensive in-off by Phil Emery enabled Wayne Dodd to pull a frame back and the league leaders levelled the match when Colin Pink pipped Ian Perry.
The visitors clinched at least a draw in rack five when Tigwell and Perry won against Pink and Beech, but Dodd and Heathcote held their nerve to seal the final frame and a vital point. King’s Head B were granted a walko0ver win over Gnosall’s Navigation in a second rearranged game.
