LSC AT THE TAV ENSURE NRBL A STAY ON THEIR TOES
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav reduced NRBL A’s lead at the top of the Newport Pool League to just three points after the 21st week of games.
The league leaders were held to a 3-3 at the Sutherland Arms in Tibberton on a night when LSC thrashed third-placed Junction A.
The Tibberton villagers did LSC the favour in unlikely circumstances. Gary Bolton ‘fluked’ a black against Antony Heathcote to put the village side into the lead, only for Wayne Dodd to beat old team mate Jack Hooper to level the score. Matt Mansell got the better of Mick Beech to make it 2-1 and Colin Pink potted both the black and the white against Tom Fisken, as the villagers raced into a 3-1 lead.
Pink and Beech gave the league leaders a fighting chance against Mansell and Colin Smith in rack five and Dodd cleared the table in his match with Hooper and Fisken to seal a vital draw for NRBL A.
Second entertained third in the crucial clash between LSC at the Tav and Junction A at Upper Bar. After losing to NRBL A last week, it was vital that LSC returned to winning ways and they made a superb start with victory in all four singles racks.
Greg Heathcote was never in trouble to put the home side in front against Hyla Marklew and Andy Miles overcame a few tight moments to see off Steve Roycroft. Neil Perkins took full advantage of Keith Rogers’s indecision in frame three to seal the third frame with a useful clearance and Ian Roberts claimed all three points in rack four by beating Sion Richards.
Honours were shared in the doubles frames, with the Junction’s Gordon Sidebottom coming to the table in sensational form to stun the home team with some clinical potting.
The Shakespeare kept up the pressure on the leaders and their challenge for the top three with a 4-2 victory over the Royal Navy Club – one of the most improved teams of the season.
Mark Kijuk left Andy Potter humiliated to put the Navy into a 0-1 lead, but Dan Brennan hit back to level the match with a frame win over Gerry Nunn. Dennis Holland ensured that Dean Smith was on the next bus back to Stafford in rack three, but the ‘Shake regrouped and won the next three frames – Ben Holmes beat Allen Pritchett and the away quartet prevailed in both doubles’ racks to seal all three points.
The Newport Arms Hotel travelled to Norbury to play Junction B and stunned the home side with a stunning 2-4 win. Dave Owen beat his niece Jess Hilditch to give the ‘Bargemen’ the lead, but Sam Frost and Kim Rigby won their singles frames to make up for Jane Hilditch losing to her father John Owen. The mother and daughter Hilditch duo prevailed in rack five and Frost and Rigby did the team proud in frame six to seal a stunning second win of the season for the girls team.
The Plough fought out an all-Staffordshire clash against Gnosall’’s Horns in Woodseaves, but it was the away side who took the spoils with a 2-4 win. Jake Anstey, Dai Smith, Steve Bullock and Charles Minors got the better of Vicky Hipkins, James Morris, Rich Bayliss and Kirk Robinson to seal the three points, although the home side won both doubles frames, with Vicky Winter and Tony Morris joining the revival.
NRBL B hosted the Railway Tavern in a mid-table clash at Newport Legion and honours were shared. Stu Morrey and Dave Bristow gave the visitors a 0-2 lead with wins over Mike and Jack Jones, but Liam Matthews and Luke Jones got the better of Adam Stone and Greg Quinn to level the match. Teams shared the doubles’ spoils and Mike and Jack Jones redeemed themselves in frame six to seal the draw.
King’s Head B hosted the Navigation in Newport and the Wheatsheaf entertained King’s Head A in the final matches of the night, but neither score was available as we closed for press. The ‘Sheaf’s in-form Simon Walley sacrificed his ‘Sheah team-mates to take a young lady to the cinema for the first time.
