NRBL A TAKE GIANT STEP TOWARDS NEWPORT POOL TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A got the better of arch title rivals LSC at the Tav on Wednesday night, in a match that may well have decided the fate of this year’s Newport & District Pool League.

NRBL A have now stretched their advantage to five points and still have a game in hand over their closest rivals after a tense 5-1 win at Newport Legion.

Greg ‘The Rod’ Heathcote got the visitors off to the perfect start against Jason Taphouse, but Wayne Dodd redressed the balance with a useful win over Andy Miles. A pressure clearance by Ant Heathcote saw off Ian Roberts in frame three and Neil Perkins failed to capitalise on a Colin Pink foul from the break in frame four, as the defending Newport Open Champion held on to make it 3-1.

Home skipper Mick Beech held his nerve against the odds in rack five to seal a five-ball clearance to confirm the victory and the home side’s Dodd sealed the unlikely rout in frame six when a dejected Miles missed a crucial pot.

The Sutherland Arms had a chance to close the gap on second-placed LSC with a visit to the in-form King’s Head A, but it was not to be and the home side prevailed in a tight 4-2 match.

Graham Tigwell, Mick Collins, Irene Whittington and Phil Emery beat Gary Bolton, Colin Smith, Jack Hooper and Tom Fisken to seal the three points in the singles frames, but Ian Perry and Jamie James lost a marathon 45-minute fifth rack and the villagers also prevailed in the final frame to give the score line a modicum of respectability.

Junction A collected all three points with a 1-5 victory at the Newport Arms Hotel. Hyla Marklew, Keith Rogers, Steve Roycroft and Sion Richards did the damage in the singles racks against Lauren Heathcote, Sam Frost, Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby, but Rigby and Hilditch did claim the sixth frame against Richards and Gordon Sidebottom. The Junction climbed to third in the league.

NRBL B visited Norbury to take on Junction B and emerged with all three points after a tight 2-4 win. Luke and Mike Jones got the better of Mick Ashforth and S. Till to set the visitors on their way, but John Owen rolled back the years against Liam Matthews to pull a frame back and Richard Morris levelled the score by beating Tom Sayce.

The visiting team regrouped for the doubles to seal all three points, with Jack Jones joining the action with Luke Jones in frame five.

The Railway Tavern were stunned by the lowly King’s Head B at Upper Bar. Maggie O’Brien totally humiliated Adam Stone in frame one, but Stu Morrey and Dave Bristow beat Chris Perry and Lucy Hennessey to put the home side in front. Greg ‘Pecker’ Quinn pipped Lyn Day to put the home side into a 3-1, but O’Brien, Perry, Hennessey and Day hit back in the doubles racks to stun the Tavern side and force a draw.

The Royal Navy Club hosted the Plough at Woodseaves and honours were shared in a tight match and there was a similar score line in the fixture between the Shakespeare and the Navigation in Gnosall.

In the final match of the night the Gnosall’s Horns beat the Wheatsheaf by the odd frame. Jake Anstey beat Nigel Sandbrook to get the home side off to a good start, but Simon Walley redressed the balance against Steve Bullock.

Lee Bullock pipped Al Harvey to put the Staffordshire cues back in front and Charles Minors made it 3-1 against Paul Skitt. Former Welsh champion Dai Smith teamed up with Anstey to seal all three points in rack five, but the ‘Sheaf did win the final frame to make it 4-2.

League organiser Neil Perkins of NDP Publicity Services is also pleased to announce that the third and final sponsor is now in place and the 2012 Newport Pool Open is up and running without long-term supporter Molson Coors.

Full details will be announced on May 16th when entries open. They will close on Sunday, July 8th and the first round draw for all three competitions will take place on Monday, July 9th.
