NEWPORT LEGION AND LSC AT THE TAV RETURN TO WINNING WAYS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Both NRBL A and LSC at the Tav suffered match cancellations in the Newport & District Pool League last week, but both returned to winning ways on Wednesday night.
The Newport Arms Hotel hosted the league-leading NRBL A and the visitors wrapped up all three points in the singles frames before squandering the two doubles racks. Wayne Dodd, Colin Pink, Mick Beech and Antony Heathcote cruised through against Lauren Heathcote, Sam Frost, Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby, but uncharacteristic errors by Pink and Dodd gifted the doubles frames to the home side.
LSC visited the Horns in Gnosall for the first time and kept up the pressure with a 1-5 away win. Greg Heathcote nearly threw away his frame-winning chance against Charles Minors, but snatched the win after a late scare. An unlikely double by Ian Roberts accounted for Steve Bullock to put the visitors into a two-frame lead and Andy Miles made it three by beating Martin Hall.
Jake Anstey overcame a barrage of Neil Perkins’s snookers to pull a frame back for the home side, but the visitors prevailed in both doubles racks to stay in touch with NRBL A at the top of the league table.
The tie of the week featured third-placed Junction A’s visit to the defending champions, King’s Head A, with the home side keen to reduce the Norbury side’s grip on third to just three points. Mick Collins’s side did just that with a stunning 5-1 home victory. “We keep rolling on,” boasted Collins, who now faces LSC at the Tav in a red-hot showdown at Upper Bar next Wednesday.
The Sutherland Arms had similar goals against the Royal Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard. The Tibberton side claimed all three points with a 4-2 win to move closer to the top three, but they did let a 3-0 lead slip and had to take the match to the final frame to seal the three points. Home skipper Jez Price suffered the ignominy of a ‘seven-balling’ in his singles frame.
The inconsistent Shakespeare travelled to Norbury to play the Junction B and emerged with all three points after a tight 2-4 win. Ross Richards-Jones and Dan Brennan lost their singles racks to put the visitors in a nightmare position, but Ben Holmes and Dean Smith prevented the ‘stinker’ and the quartet prevailed in the doubles racks to seal a useful win.
The Navigation needed all three points against a mid-table Wheatsheaf side in Gnosall and they very nearly pulled off the upset after beating Paul Skitt and Simon Walley in their singles racks. But Nigel Sandbrook and Al Harvey redressed the balance and Mark Hodgkinson joined the revival in the doubles to seal a 2-4 win for the visitors.
NRBL B picked up all three points in a tight 4-2 victory over lowly King’s Head B. The home side won all four singles racks, courtesy of Tom Sayce, Luke and Mike Jones and Liam Matthews, but Maggie O’Brien and Lucy Hennessey gave the girls something to crow about in frame five against Jack Jones and Sayce and Chris Perry and Lyn Day won the final frame to restore female pride at Newport Legion.
The Railway Tavern entertained the Plough at Woodseaves and managed to seal all three points with the loss of just one frame. Stu Morrey and Russ Porter made it 2-0 against James Morris and Rich Bayliss, but Kirk Robinson stunned Adam Stone in rack three to give the villagers hope.
Greg Quinn got on top of Vicky Hipkins in frame four and Dave Bristow joined the party in the doubles, as the visitors – with the addition of Vicky Winter in the fifth frame – were beaten.
