NEWPORT LEGION A SEAL FOURTH SUCCESSIVE 6-0 POOL ROUT
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A continued their march to glory with a fourth successive 6-0 win, with Gnosall’s Horns the victims in a week 16 match in the Newport & District Pool League – where last week’s fixtures were reversed to start the second half of the season.
Antony Heathcote, Wayne Dodd, Colin Pink and Jason Taphouse won all four singles racks and skipper Mick Beech joined the party in frame five to confirm the rout. “Wim well and truly ablaze,” gloated team player Antony Heathcote.
LSC at the Tav faced a tricky visit to the Navigation in Gnosall and came away with a much needed 1-5 win. But the match could have swung either way in the early stages: Greg Heathcote was made to work hard for his win over Scott Podmore before landlord Steve Whitlock got the better of Ben Longstaff to make it 1-1.
Ian Roberts and Andy Miles won the next two frames for the visitors and Heathcote set a returning Neil Perkins up for a simple black clearance in rack five to seal all three points. Miles and Roberts sneaked through against Podmore and Whitlock to claim the final frame for the visitors.
The King’s Head A continued to home in on the top three with a 5-1 victory at the Newport Arms Hotel. Phil Emery, Irene Whittington, Ian Perry and Graham Tigwell got the better of Lauren Heathcote, Sam Frost, Jane Hilditch and Kim Rigby to seal the win in the singles frames, but Hilditch and Rigby pulled a consolation frame back for the home side in rack six by beating Whittington and Emery.
The King’s Head B hoped to exact revenge on the Shakespeare for last week’s defeat, but it was not to be. The visitors dropped just one frame on their way to a comfortable win, with Lyn Day picking up a consolation frame for the home side against Ben Holmes.
Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms travelled to the Railway Tavern and managed to sneak a tense 2-4 win after relinquishing an early 0-2 lead. Tom Fisken and Colin Smith set the villagers on their way against Greg Quinn and Adam Stone, but Stu Morrey beat Matt Mansell and Russ Porter got the better of Anthony Winfield. But the Suthy won both doubles frames to seal the three points after Porter had gone in-off on the black in the fifth frame.
Junction B held the Wheatsheaf to a 3-3 draw at Norbury. Dave Owen pipped Nigel Sandbrook to give the Norbury side a good start, but they were pegged back by Simon Walley and Al Harvey. Richard Morris left the match finely poised at 2-2 after beating Paul Skitt and honours were shared in the doubles frames, with Harvey and Walley sealing a point for the visitors in rack six.
NRBL B entertained the Plough from Woodseaves and honours were also shared in this contest. Vicky Winter embarrassed Jack Jones in frame one, but Legion B hit back with wins for Mike and Luke Jones over James Morris and Vicky Hipkins. Rich Bayliss levelled the match in the fourth frame and honours were shared in the doubles frames: Morris and Bayliss beat Luke and Jack Jones to confirm a point.
The Junction A were held to a 3-3 draw by the Royal Navy Club in a rearranged match on Monday night and fell behind the leading two as a result. Sion Richards, Keith Rogers and Steve Roycroft pushed the home side into a 3-0 lead with wins over Dennis Holland, Jez Price and Mark Kijuk, but Allan Pritchett hit back against Hyla Marklew to give the away side a fighting chance.
And how they took it. Holland and Kijuk beat Rogers and Richards in rack five and Gerry Nunn and Pritchett wrapped up a most unlikely comeback in the sixth frame. The Junction A prevailed in the reverse fixture at Bellman’s Yard on Wednesday night with the loss of one frame.
