LEGION’S MICK BEECH BLOWS HIS TRUMPET
AFTER CRUSHING WIN OVER GNOSALL’S HORNS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A extended their lead at the top of the Newport & District Pool League table with a 6-0 demolition of Gnosall’s Horns.
Skipper Mick Beech was his usual modest self after seven-balling Jake Anstey to put the home side in front. Colin Pink made it 2-0 in rack two and Antony Heathcote won a scrappy third frame to make it three. Wayne Dodd wrapped up the three points in rack four and the quartet made no mistake in the doubles to seal a comfortable win against the league newcomers.
LSC at the Tav needed to bounce back from last week’s first defeat of the season when they entertained the Navigation at Upper Bar. But their result was not available as we closed for press.
The King’s Head A continued their steady climb towards the top three after a miserable start to the season, courtesy of a 5-1 victory over the Newport Arms Hotel.
The match of the night featured the duel between the Sutherland Arms and the Railway Tavern in Tibberton and it was all systems go for the villagers. Matt Mansell, Tom Fisken, Colin Smith and Jack Hooper did the damage in the singles and, despite then fact that the visitors pulled a frame back in the doubles, the damage had already been done.
The Shakespeare picked up three much needed points with a 5-1 win over the King’s Head B. Chris Perry put the visitors into a surprise lead by beating Andy Potter, but their delight was short-lived.
Laura Brennan redressed the balance against Lucy Hennessey, Dean Smith Smith beat Maggie O’Brien and Ross Richards-Jones made it 3-1 against Tash Pugh. Brennan and Ben Holmes teamed up to make it 5-1 and the Shake sealed rack six to wrap up all three points.
In the final match of the evening, the Junction B visited the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston and were beaten 4-2 by the home side.
NRBL B faced a difficult away clash at the Plough in Woodseaves, but the result was not available as we closed for press. The match between the Royal Navy Club and Junction A was postponed and will now be played on Monday night.
