OMAN’S HAMED AL-WAHAIBI SET FOR
RALLY SOHAR SHOWDOWN IN OMAN
· Young Omani Al-Kiyumi prepares for second event with WMS
· WMS set to support fellow Omani driver Hmoud Al-Touqi
· Rally Sohar switches to start and finish venue in Muscat
MUSCAT (OMAN): Hamed Al-Wahaibi and young Omani team-mate Arif Al-Kiyumi continue their Oman national rally championship campaign with this weekend’s Rally Sohar, the second round of the increasingly popular rally series taking place this year in the Sultanate of Oman, which has switched its starting venue from Sohar to the capital Muscat.
Al-Wahaibi, a former FIA Middle East Group N champion, announced at the end of last year that Wahaibi Motor Sports (WMS) would be looking to nurture new rallying talent in Oman and Hamed was a man of his word.
While he and new co-driver Zakarya Al-Aufi were taking victory in the recent Muscat Rally, Al-Wahaibi’s young protégé Al-Kiyumi, 22, was shadowing him to second overall alongside the experienced Ulster co-driver Allan Harryman.
The WMS quartet are now preparing for the Rally Sohar in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions, where they will line-up alongside a host of Oman’s leading rally drivers.
Hmoud Al-Touqi will also receive support from WMS for his challenge for honours in Rally Sohar, where Al-Wahaibi will also blood a couple of young mechanics as part of his experienced international service team.
Al-Wahaibi has been enjoying a hectic schedule since his victory in the Muscat Rally. Not content with taking part in a Red Bull Car Park Drifting competition last weekend, the Omani has also been involved with Gulf Traffic Week with the Royal Oman Police for three days and work with a motor show at Sultan Qaboos university for two days.
Following Rally Sohar, Al-Wahaibi plans to participate in a Road Safety campaign on March 17-21 at Sultan Qaboos University. “We have a very diverse programme of events this year,” admitted Al-Wahaibi.
“The rallying programme takes centre stage, but there are so many equally important events to work on in relation to road safety and the promotion and enhancement of motor sport in Oman and the region.”
His Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution now sports the ‘Safety First’ logo because of the Omani’s ongoing work with road safety.
