NRBL A CRUSH ROYAL NAVY CLUB TO
STAY CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A maintained a clear lead in the Newport & District Pool League after securing a comfortable 6-0 victory over the Royal Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard. Gerry Nunn suffered the ignominy of being seven-balled in his singles’ frame.
LSC at the Tav played a tense local derby match against the Railway Tavern at the Railway and their unbeaten start to the season was at stake. Under pressure from the start, the ‘visitors’ duly lost their first game of the season and were sent packing with their tails between their legs by a rampant home side.
Stu Morrey started the misery with a stunning shot and a frame win over Greg Heathcote, only for Andy Miles to pull a rack back against Adam Stone. But it got worse for the visitors in the next two frames, with Greg Quinn disposing of Ben Longstaff and Russ Porter seeing off his ‘father-in-law’ and former pub landlord Ian Roberts.
Heathcote and Longstaff managed to pull the fifth frame back against Porter and Quinn, but Dave Bristow and Morrey prevailed over Roberts and Miles in rack six to send the home team into oblivion. “I suppose our run had to come to an end at some point,” blarted LSC skipper Longstaff.
The Junction A had an excellent opportunity to keep the pressure on the leading teams against the Navigation in Gnosall, but Hyla Marklew’s side were held to a 3-3 draw by Steve Whitlock’s outfit and remain third.
The Shakespeare should have got back on track after a couple of loose performances and secured all three points with a win over the Newport Arms Hotel, with ‘Shake barmaid Lauren Heathcote playing for the away side. But honours were shared after a plucky performance by the Lower Bar team.
Mick Collins’s King’s Head A maintained their climb back through the league table with a hard-earned 4-2 victory over the Horns in Gnosall. The defending champions now hold fourth place.
The Sutherland Arms beat the Junction B, 4-2, in Norbury and NRBL B were held to a 3-3 draw by the visiting Wheatsheaf at Newport Legion. According to the ‘Sheaf’s Paul Skitt, the visitors made several crucial mistakes in the first frames with a devastated Simon Walley silenced by Jack Jones in the first of the singles racks. But the visitors responded well to seal a useful draw.
The Plough snatched three much-needed points with a comfortable 5-1 victory at lowly King’s Head B. “It was easy-peesy,” joked Vicky Hipkins from the visiting side.
