LEAGUE LEADERS MARCH ON IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A and LSC at the Tav maintained their impressive form to remain clear of the rest of the pack after week 13 of the Newport & District Pool League.

NRBL A entertained Gnosall’s Navigation and were not in a forgiving mood with team regular Antony Heathcote boasting about a 6-0 home win for the former league winners.

Junction B visited LSC at the Railway Tavern and took the game to the wire. R. Morris disposed of an out-of-sorts Ian Roberts to put the Staffordshire side into the lead and S. Till’s win over Ben Longstaff made it 0-2. But LSC are made of stern stuff these days and Greg Heathcote pulled a frame back by beating Dave Owen and Andy Miles levelled the score against John Owen.

The opening doubles rack was tight and Roberts decided against a clearance with two shots remaining, preferring to leave Till and Dave Owen in a snooker. It was a wise choice and Miles used the two shots to seal the frame win. A useful clearance by Longstaff sealed all three points for the home side in the sixth frame.

The Railway Tavern were determined to close the gap on the Junction A for third position at Norbury and it looked possible with the match finely poised at 2-2. But the visitors lost the doubles racks to Hyla Marklew’s high-flying canal-siders, who sealed the three points.

King’s Head A maintained their climb back up the table after a miserable start to the season at the expense of the Royal Navy Club. Mick Collins’s defending champions were forced to work harder than last year to beat the league’s in-form side and duly sealed a 4-2 win. “I think our snowball has melted,” quipped Jez Price from the visiting team.

Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms got back on track with a much-needed 4-2 victory over the inconsistent NRBL B and the Horns travelled to the Newport Arms Hotel in Newport to record a 1-5 victory, with Hannah Evans and Lauren Heathcote starring for the losing side.

The Plough entertained the Shakespeare in Woodseaves, but were unable to stop the visitors from taking all three points. Dean Smith, Ben Holmes and Andy Potter made it 0-3 to the ‘Shake against Kirk Robinson, James Morris and Vicky Hipkins, but Richard Bayliss pulled a frame back for the home side against Ross Richards-Jones. That’s as close as the villagers got to achieving a result, however, and Holmes, Jones, Potter and Smith prevailed in both doubles racks.

The Wheatsheaf picked up three points at Chetwynd Aston in the final match of the night against the King’s Head B with the loss of two frames.
