NRBL A MAINTAIN TOP SPOT WITH

POOL WIN OVER RAILWAY TAVERN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Legion’s A team maintained their lead in the Newport & District Pool League with a tense 4-2 victory over a determined Railway Tavern side.

LSC at the Tav faced a banana skin visit to Newport Legion to defend their unbeaten start to the season against NRBL B and the youngsters didn’t let their A team down in pushing LSC all the way.

Mike Jones beat Ian Roberts to put the home side in front in a marathon opening frame, but Greg Heathcote edged his rack against Liam Matthews to level the score. Andy Miles pressurised Tom Sayce into submission to make it 1-2, but Jack Jones pipped Ben Longstaff in a tight black ball game to make it 2-2.

A rampant Heathcote carried out an eight-ball clearance on his first visit in the first doubles rack to confirm at least a draw for the visitors and maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Ian Roberts redeemed himself in the final rack to confirm all three points for LSC.

The in-form Royal Navy Club hosted the Horns from Gnosall, with the home side knowing that victory would take them firmly into the top half of the table. The veterans duly continued a remarkable run of form to beat the Gnosall side with the loss of two frames.

The result means that the Bellman’s Yard outfit put their heads above cloud cover into the top seven of the league for the first time in Newport pool league history. “The roll just keeps going on and on like a snowball gathering more snow,” joked skipper Jez Price.

Junction A came out on top of their B team in the Norbury derby match and maintained third position and their challenge for the league title with a nervy 2-4 win.

The Sutherland Arms came out too strong for the King’s Head B at Chetwynd End and the villagers ran out 0-6 winners, although the score line did flatter the Tibberton side by all accounts.

The Shakespeare got back on track with a 3-3 draw with the Wheatsheaf, but the Chetwynd Aston side were left thinking what might have been after squandering a 1-3 lead against the inconsistent Upper Bar team, according to Shake starlet Laura Brennan. Simon ‘Thumbtie’ Whalley was the star for the visitors.

Mick Collins’s King’s Head A journeyed to the Navigation in Gnosall in their quest for three much-needed points and emerged with all three, despite dropping two frames to the stubborn Staffordshire side in a hard-fought match.

The Plough at Woodseaves sealed all three points against the Newport Arms Hotel with a comfortable 5-1 victory. “We have been playing well recently and knew it was a matter of time before someone was punished,” said Vicky Hipkins of the village side.
