NRBL A AND LSC AT THE TAV STAY
CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Both NRBL A and LSC at the Tavern won their respective week 11 matches in the Newport & District Pool League to stay three points clear of the chasing pack.
NRBL A visited Chetwynd Aston to take on the Wheatsheaf, but they got a much closer match than they bargained for with the inspired ‘Sheaf taking the match outcome to the sixth frame. Mick Beech and Antony Heathcote had pushed the visitors into a 0-2 lead at the expense of Al Harvey and Simon Whalley, but the yokels hit back with Nigel Sandbrook and Paul Skitt clinching stunning wins against Wayne Dodd and Colin Pink.
With the match finely balanced at 2-2, Beech and Pink managed to dispose of Whalley and Mark Hodgkinson to make it 2-3 and Heathcote watched Dodd make a stunning clearance to seal all three points for the visitors.
LSC at the Tavern hosted the Newport Arms Hotel and had to work a little harder than anticipated to claim all three points with a 4-2 win. Ian Roberts edged a tight first frame against Lauren Heathcote to put the former league leaders into the driving seat and Greg Heathcote made mo mistake against Jane Hilditch to make it 2-0.
But Hannah Evans was not to be denied and used a little good fortune to beat Ben Longstaff to give the visitors a fighting chance. In-form Andy Miles made it 3-1 with a safe win over Kim Rigby and Greg Heathcote and Neil Perkins sealed all three points in the fifth frame, shortly before Evans teamed up with Rigby to snatch a consolation frame against a bewildered Miles and Roberts.
Last year’s runners-up, the Sutherland Arms, hosted high-flying Junction A in Tibberton, but the match went in favour of the visitors, who clung to on third place in the league. Tom Fisken settled home nerves with a frame win over Sion Richards but the in-form Keith Rogers beat Gary Bolton to level the score and Steve Roycroft made it 1-2 to the visitors.
A rampant Hyla Markew ensured the Staffordshire side came away with at least a draw with victory over Jack Hooper and honours were shared in the doubles racks, with Fisken and Hooper teaming up against Richards and Rogers to give the home side a lifeline. Those dreams were extinguished by Marklew and Richards – they beat Bolton and Matt Mansell in the final frame to send all three points back to Norbury.
The King’s Head A were forced to work hard for a 5-1 victory at the
Plough in Woodseaves. Vicky Hipkins’s win over Irene Whittington was the only glimmer of positive news that the villagers had to show for their night’s work against the defending champions.
The Shakespeare cruised passed the Horns at Gnosall with the loss of just one frame. D. Smith put the visitors in front with a frame win over Andy Potter, but it was one-way traffic from then on. Dave Marshall, Dean Smith and Ross Richards-Jones led the onslaught in the next three frames and Jones teamed up with Shake landlord Ben Holmes to seal all three points in rack five. Smith freshened up and teamed up with Marshall to snatch the sixth frame.
Bottom side King’s Head B entertained the in-form Royal Navy Club, but no-one predicted yet another stunning result for the visiting veterans. A superb run of performances continued with a 0-6 whitewash at Upper Bar. “We are on a roll, gathering pace, but not sure how long this can go on,” joked Navy Club skipper Jez Price.
The Railway Tavern travelled to Norbury to face the Junction B and left with all three points to keep up their title challenge. Russ Porter succumbed to Mick Ashforth in frame one, but Stu Morrey levelled the score with a seven-ball frame win over Dave Owen.
S. Till again put the ‘canal-siders’ into the lead by sending Dave Bristow packing, only for Greg Quinn to win a marathon fourth frame against R. Morris to level the score. Adam Stone joined the Tavern challenge in the doubles and the visitors claimed both frames and all three points.
Cup semi-finalists NRBL B entertained the Navigation at Newport Legion and claimed a rampant 6-0 win. Liam Matthews, Mike Jones, Jack Jones and Tom Sayce did the singles’ damage against Ian Hogarth, P. Lewis, Geoff Arrowsmith and Steve Whitlock and there was no way back for the stunned Staffordshire side in the doubles frames.
