TWO LEGION TEAMS JOIN WHEATSHEAF AND KING’S
HEAD A IN NEIL CLARK MEMORIAL SEMI-FINALS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A, NRBL A, the Wheatsheaf and NRBL B made it through to the semi-finals of the 2012 Neil Clark Memorial Trophy after a dramatic night in the Newport & District Pool League’s cup quarter-finals.

The match of the night pitched the league leading NRBL A against their arch-rivals, LSC at the Tav, but the home side prevailed in four straight frames in a disappointingly one-sided contest.

Mick Beech snookered Andy Miles into submission to clinch the first frame for the home side and Colin Pink got the better of Ian Roberts to make it 2-0. Despite playing with stitches in his head following a building accident, Wayne Dodd made a useful clearance to deprive Greg Heathcote of a chance of pulling a frame back and Antony Heathcote rode his luck to beat Ben Longstaff and seal the home side’s place in the last four in the fourth singles frame.

The King’s Head A prevailed over the Sutherland Arms after a straightforward 5-1 victory in Tibberton, according to skipper Mick Collins.

NRBL B booked their semi-final place and a match against Newport Arms Hotel with a comfortable 0-4 victory at Lower Bar. The Legion side were rarely troubled, although Mike Jones put Kim Rigby in six snookers on his way to a frame win and Jack Jones missed the chance of a seven-ball clearance in his frame.

The Wheatsheaf were forced to work hard for their tiebreak frame victory over the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar. The match was finely poised at 3-3 and Simon Whalley managed to get the better of Greg Quinn to send the visitors into a frenzy, although no-one was able to find the dummy that the ‘Sheaf’s Mark Hodgkinson had thrown out when he conceded the final doubles frame…
