NRBL A AND LSC WIN 5-1 TO STAY
CLEAR IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Both the table-topping NRBL A and closest rivals, LSC at the Tav, faced bottom four opposition in the 10th round of matches in this year’s Newport & District Pool League and both came away with three points and 5-1 home wins.
NRBL A entertained Junction B at Newport Legion and dropped just one frame to maintain top spot on frame difference. Mick Beech disposed of Mick Ashcroft, but Wayne Dodd lost to S. Till, as the visitors levelled the match.
Colin Pink beat John Owen to put the home side in the driving seat and Ant Heathcote made a seven-ball clearance to crush R. Morris. The quartet made no mistake in the doubles either to confirm a comfortable win.
LSC at the Tav cruised to a comfortable 5-1 win against King’s Head B at Upper Bar. Greg Heathcote got the better of Lucy Hennessey to put the home side into the lead but, when Neil Perkins went in off on his final black against Lyn Day, the visitors levelled the score.
Ben Longstaff and Andy Miles produced solid frames against Chris Perry and Lorna McPhee to confirm at least a draw for the former league leaders and a stunning double by Ian Roberts sealed the three points in the first doubles rack.
Third-placed Junction A hosted NRBL B at Norbury and maintained their title challenge with a 4-2 home win.
The match of the night featured the inconsistent King’s Head A and the Railway Tavern at Chetwynd End. The visitors surged into a 0-3 lead, with Russ Porter, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey getting the better of Ian Perry, Graham Tigwell and Jamie James.
But Mick Collins edged his frame against Greg Quinn to give the home side a fighting chance and Phil Emery and Irene Whittington joined the fight back in rack five to give the defending champions a chance of snatching the draw. Collins and Perry duly prevailed against Morrey and Didi Bristow in the sixth frame to share the spoils.
The Shakespeare, still smarting from last week’s defeat at the hands of LSC, travelled to Tibberton to face the Sutherland Arms in a crucial clash and succumbed to a 4-2 defeat, with Andy Potter shining for the away side and Gary Bolton doing the damage for the home team, who climbed to sixth on the back of this result.
The Plough at Woodseaves shared the spoils with the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston and the Horns shaded the bragging rights in the all-Gnosall clash against the Navigation.
Newport Arms Hotel entertained the in-form Royal Navy Club, but the visitors continued their stunning run of form. Kim Rigby beat Jez Price to set the home side on their way, but wins for Alan Pritchett, Gerry Nunn and Dennis Holland pushed the veterans into the promised land and the quartet continued to play well in the doubles to seal a stunning 1-5 away win.
The Shakespeare Inn will host a ‘killer’ pool competition from 19.30hrs on Sunday evening (January 29th). Entry is £2 and refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend and cash prizes are on offer.
LSC’s Andy Miles is the form player, having won three of the first five competitions this year, with Greg Heathcote and Ben Holmes taking the spoils in the other two fixtures.
