NRBL A CRUSH B TEAM RIVALS TO STAY TOP OF POOL TABLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The most recent match of the night in the Newport & District Pool League was arguably the local derby clash between the two NRBL sides at Newport Legion, with the A team hoping to overcome a potential banana skin against their younger counterparts.

The A team duly crushed their rivals without the loss of a single frame and remain top of the table on frame difference from LSC at the Tav, who beat the Shakespeare, 1-5, at Upper Bar.

Andy Potter got the ‘Shake off to a winning start against Ian Roberts, but LSC hit back in the next three frames with wins for Greg Heathcote, Ben Longstaff and Andy Miles over Dan Brennan, Dave Marshall and Ross Richards-Jones. Dean Smith and Ben Holmes were not able to prevent LSC taking all three points in a scrappy frame against Miles and Roberts and Longstaff and Heathcote sealed the unlikely rout in rack six.

After a stunning defeat the previous week, the Railway Tavern were hoping to bounce back against the Horns from Gnosall and they succeeded with a 4-2 home win.

The under-achieving Plough entertained the Sutherland Arms in Woodseaves. They achieved a score line they have been threatening to do for a while – the match went to the deciding frame, but the Staffordshire side claimed all three points to stun the visitors.

Newport Arms Hotel’s ladies team travelled to the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston, but there was to be no upset on this occasion with the ‘Sheaf sealing all three points with the loss of just one frame.

Junction B hosted the King’s Head A in Norbury, the visitors arriving fresh and bushy-tailed after an unlikely 10-0 victory in a Telford world rules league match on Monday night. They were on form again on Wednesday evening and sealed the three points without dropping a single frame.

The Junction A made no mistake of overcoming the King’s Head B at Chetwynd End, but they did drop two frames in the process. Lucy Hennessey and Chris Perry fired the home side into a 2-0 advantage with wins over Sion Richards and Keith Rogers, but the Norbury outfit hit back to win the next four frames.

Hyla Marklew and Steve Roycroft beat Maggie O’Brien and Lorna McPhee and the Junction quartet prevailed in the doubles racks.

Gnosall’s Navigation were stunned by the in-form Royal Navy Club in the final match of the evening. The visitors claimed a second successive scalp as they continued to climb away from the foot of the table.

The Shakespeare Inn will host a ‘killer’ pool competition from 19.30hrs on Sunday evening (January 29th). Entry is £2 and refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend and cash prizes are on offer.
