NRBL A RETURN TO TOP SPOT IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A made light work of beating the ladies team from the King’s Head and returned to the top of the Newport & District Pool League summit. “We let our pool do the talking day we,” boasted skipped Mick Beech on the back of a devastating football defeat to ‘The Blues’ on the night.
LSC at the Tav started the night with a one-point lead in the league and faced the Plough from Woodseaves. But the league leaders endured a harsh reality check against the villagers and were lucky to salvage their unbeaten record from six topsy-turvy frames, as they slipped behind NRBL A on frame difference.
James Morris benefited from a missed black by Ian Roberts to put the visitors into a 0-1 lead and Richard Bayliss rode his luck to make it 0-2 against Neil Perkins. Vicky Hipkins had a chance to make it 0-3 against Andy Miles, before the LSC player regrouped to claw a frame back on the black, but Vicky Winter was not to be denied and stunned Greg Heathcote with a double-double on the black to put the Staffordshire side in the driving seat.
The LSC’s doubles record is second to none, however, and Miles and Roberts won the fifth frame to give the league leaders a fighting chance and Perkins and Heathcote rode what luck was available to seal a priceless draw and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
King’s Head A expected to continue their steady climb up the table by disposing of NRBL B at Chetwynd End. Unbeaten until two weeks ago, the visitors needed a boost after two staid performances and they were in inspired form.
Luke and Jack Jones, Liam Matthews and Tom Sayce wiped the smiles of the faces of Phil Emery, Jamie James. Irene Whittington and Mick Collins, although the home side did win both doubles racks after Graham Tigwell joined what had become a wake alongside Ian Perry in frame six.
The Sutherland Arms are slowly creeping back up the league table after a disappointing start and it was vital that they kept the run going against the Wheatsheaf. But the Chetwynd Aston side held their nerve to claim a memorable 3-3 draw.
The Railway Tavern expected to maintain their run of decent form with a victory over the Royal Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard, but it was not to be and the veterans stunned the youngsters with a 4-2 win. Alan Pritchett, Dennis Holland and Gerry Nunn silenced the visitors with wins over Dave Bristow, Russ Porter and Adam Stone, but Stu Morrey got the better of Jez Price to breathe life into the fading Tavern league challenge. Pritchett and Nunn were not to be denied and the Navy sealed a famous victory in rack five over a silenced Porter and Greg Quinn.
Newport Arms Hotel hosted Gnosall’s Navigation at Lower Bar and Sam Frost was one of the stars of a useful 3-3 draw for the home side.
The in-form Horns entertained Junction B in Gnosall. After winning their last two matches without dropping a frame, the Horns maintained their three-match winning run with a useful 4-2 victory over the Norbury side.
Junction A had the chance to close the gap on the visiting Shakespeare to a single point at Norbury and they produced the best performance of the night with a 4-2 win.
Sion Richards, Keith Rogers, Hyla Marklew and Steve Roycroft humiliated Andy Potter, Dean Smith, Ross Richards-Jones and Ben Holmes in the singles, although Jones and Holmes did pull a frame back for the Upper Bar side against Rogers and Roycroft in frame five.
The Shakespeare Inn will host a ‘killer’ pool competition from 19.30hrs on Sunday evening (January 22nd). Entry is £2 and refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend and cash prizes are on offer.
