LSC REGAIN TOP SPOT AS LEGION A CRASH TO SHAKESPEARE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav regained top spot in the Newport & District Pool League on a night when NRBL A suffered a humiliating 2-4 defeat to the Shakespeare and the Horns ended NRBL B’s undefeated run at Newport Legion.

Andy Potter benefited from an unfortunate Mick Beech break to put the Shake into a 1-0 lead against the title favourites and Dan Brennan stunned Antony Heathcote to make it 2-0. Dave Marshall catapulted the home side into dreamland by beating Wayne Dodd to earn at least a point for the Upper Bar team, but Dean Smith had his customary stinker against Colin Pink, as the Newport Open champion gave the away side a fighting chance.

Pink and Beech prevailed in rack five to push the visitors into a showdown for an unlikely draw, but the Shakespeare were not to be denied and Potter and Marshall worked well together against Heathcote and Dodd to seal a stunning victory.

LSC at the Tav had to come back from a 0-2 deficit to defeat the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston. Nigel Sandbrook and Simon Whalley edged tight frames against Ian Roberts and Neil Perkins to put the home side in sight of an upset, but Greg Heathcote and Andy Miles levelled the match by getting the better of Al Harvey and Paul Skitt.

Miles teamed up with Roberts to seal at least a draw for the visitors in rack five and Perkins held his nerve to seal a useful clearance in the deciding rack to give himself and Heathcote victory and send LSC at the Tav back to the top of the table.

The Railway Tavern kept up their title challenge with a 4-2 home victory over Gnosall’s Navigation. Adam Stone and Russ Porter got the better of Geoff Arrowsmith and B. Kinnersley to give the Tav a great start, but P. Lewis capitalised on the home side’s fragility by beating Stu Morrey. Greg Quinn sealed a point for the Tavern in frame four and honours were shared in the doubles with Quinn and Porter sealing the three points in rack six.

The Sutherland Arms have made a slow start to the season by their high standards, but they bounced back with an emphatic 5-1 victory over the Newport Arms Hotel. Debutant retiree Stuart Dolphin got the villagers off to a good start against Hannah Evans, but Gary Bolton was well and truly humiliated in frame two by Sam Frost.

Jack Hooper and Tom Fisken put the home side back on the straight and narrow in frames three and four against Lauren Heathcote and Kim Rigby and James Berry and Matt Mansell joined the party in frame five to seal the three points.

The upset of the night occurred at the Newport Legion, where the previously unbeaten NRBL B were destroyed by a rampant Horns side. D. Smith, J. Anstey, S. Bullock and R. Holmes did the damage for the Gnosall outfit against Luke and Jack Jones, Liam Matthews and Tom Sayce in the singles and there was no way back for the home side in a match that the youngsters will want to forget in a hurry.

The King’s Head A, the league’s defending champions, defeated their B team without the loss of a frame and honours were shared in a tight encounter between the Junction B and the Royal Navy Club at Norbury.

The Junction A managed to overcome the Plough at Woodseaves, 2-4, in the final doubles match in the last match of the evening. Sion Richards and Keith Rogers got the better of Tony Morris and Kirk Robinson to put the canal-side team in front, but James Morris and Rich Bayliss hit back to level the match. The Junction prevailed in both doubles racks, with Richards and Hyla Marklew sealing the three points in rack six.

The Shakespeare Inn will host a ‘killer’ pool competition from 19.30hrs on Sunday evening (January 15th). Entry is £2 and refreshments will be served. Everyone is welcome to attend and cash prizes are on offer.
