RAMPANT HORNS CLAIM FIRST WIN OF POOL LEAGUE SEASON
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Gnosall’s Horns, the newcomers to the Newport & District Pool League, claimed their first victory of the campaign with a superb 6-0 demolition of the King’s Head B.
NRBL B retained their unbeaten start to the league season with an excellent 1-5 victory over the Royal Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard. Luke and Jack Jones got the visitors off to a winning start and Liam Matthews confirmed at least a draw with a stunning seven-ball humiliation of home skipper Jez Price in rack three. Mike Jones let the side down with defeat in frame four, but the away side prevailed in both doubles frames to seal a useful three points.
The lowly Plough at Woodseaves did themselves proud against title favourites NRBL A in Newport. The outcome went down to the doubles racks, with the Legion eventually winning 4-2. “We were very unlucky. I am still kicking myself,” said Vicky Winter of the beaten side.
NRBL’s consolation was snatching top spot from LSC at the Tav, who were held to a 3-3 draw by the Sutherland Arms from Tibberton.
The New Inn will return to the Shakespeare for their home matches in future weeks and they all but ended King’s Head A’s chances of retaining the league title with a thumping 1-5 victory over the below-par home side at Chetwynd End. “I suppose that ends our chance of winning the title again,” reflected team player Jamie James.
The Railway Tavern dropped just one frame in a 1-5 victory against the Newport Arms Hotel at Lower Bar. Honours were shared in the clash between the Junction A and the Wheatsheaf at Norbury and Gnosall’s Navigation continued their good run of recent form with a tense 4-2 victory over the Junction B.
The Shakespeare Inn will host the first of its weekly New Year ‘killer’ pool competitions from 19.30hrs on Sunday evening (January 8th). Entry is £2 and refreshments will be served.
