OMAN’S HAMED AL-WAHAIBI AIMS TO END HIS RALLYING
RETURN YEAR WITH VICTORY IN OMANI NATIONAL RALLY
· Al-Wahaibi and Harryman line up in Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X
MUSCAT (OMAN): Oman’s Hamed Al-Wahaibi will join forces with Ulster co-driver Allan Harryman for the last time this season, as he bids to end the year on a winning note in Rally National Sur, the final round of the Oman National Rally Championship, in north-eastern Oman this weekend.
Al-Wahaibi returned to the sport in a blaze of publicity in November and immediately made his mark on the special stages with a convincing victory in the penultimate round of the Oman National Rally Championship.
At the wheel of his Wahaibi Motor Sports (WMS)-built Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, the former regional Group N champion then went on to set some impressive stage times in the Dubai International Rally against the region’s top drivers. After holding second overall, the Omani finished a very creditable fourth.
“The National Rally Sur is considered as part of our set programme of events,” admitted Al-Wahaibi. “I am interested to participate for many reasons. Obviously this is for all the local spectators, to support motor sport in general and, particularly, to support rallying in Oman. It is also important for the team at Wahaibi Motor Sports to get to know the rally and to continue to work together in a competitive environment.”
Al-Wahaibi and Harryman face stiff competition in the Oman national series, which is flourishing after several years struggling for entries.
The Omani lines up on an impressive entry list for the two-day rally on Thursday and Friday alongside the likes of Khaled Soomar, Saif Al-Harthy, Hamoud Al-Toqi, Khalid Al-Minji and Ibrahim Al-Abri in a variety of powerful Mitsubishis and Subarus.
