LSC AT THE TAV TAKE SLENDER
POOL LEAD INTO CHRISTMAS BREAK
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav hold the Christmas bragging rights in the Newport & District Pool League and a one-point lead heading into the holiday break, but they had to work mighty hard for a 3-3 draw at an inspired Junction A on Wednesday night.
After Greg Heathcote had turned around a tight frame against Sion Richards and Ian Roberts had rode his luck to pip Steve Roycroft, the Norbury side hit back with a vengeance. Keith Rogers stunned Ben Longstaff to make it 1-2 and a superb six-ball clearance by Hyla Marklew subjected Neil Perkins to his first defeat of the season.
Rogers and Roycroft were in stunning form to seven-ball Heathcote and Longstaff in rack five, but Andy Miles and Roberts held their nerve in frame six, once Richards had missed the black and Roberts potted his last two balls to earn the draw.
NRBL A bounced back from last week’s crushing defeat to demolish the Sutherland Arms with the loss of just one frame in Newport. Mick Beech humiliated Matt Mansell to set the away side on their way, but Newport Open champion Colin Pink lost his second successive match as the villagers levelled the score.
Antony Heathcote made it 1-2 to the Legion side and former Tibberton starlet Wayne Dodd returned to his old hunting ground to beat Gary Bolton and make it 1-3. The Legion quartet also prevailed in the doubles racks to keep up the pressure on LSC at the Tav at the top of the league.
Defending champions, King’s Head A, have made an awful start to the year but are slowly clawing back lost ground and skipper Mick Collins was delighted to report a comfortable 5-1 victory against the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd End. Ian Perry, Phil Emery and Mick Collins did the damage in the singles, but Paul Skitt starred for the away side with a win over Irene Whittington.
NRBL B retained their unbeaten record with a 3-3 draw at the Railway Tavern and a resurgent Navigation at Gnosall coasted through against the King’s Head B with the loss of just one frame. Meanwhile, Vicky Winter confirmed that the Plough from Woodseaves won the bottom of the table clash with the Horns with the loss of two frames in Gnosall.
The New Inn managed to edge a tight match against the Royal Navy Club by a similar 4-2 score line and the Junction B beat Newport Arms Hotel by another 2-4 score at Lower Bar.
Lauren Heathcote set the home side on their way in rack one against R. Morris. Sam Frost lost to Dave Owen, only for Jane Hilditch to pip S. Till to put the ladies back in front. M. Prinold beat Kim Rigby to level the match before the doubles racks and Morris, Till, Owen and Mick Ashcroft prevailed in the remaining two frames to seal all three points for the Staffordshire side.
Results should be sent by text message as soon as possible after matches on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153. Please note that all league fees (£40 per team) must be paid by December 20th at the latest or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left with staff at the Railway Tavern.
