LSC AT THE TAV REACH UNCHARTED TERRITORY
NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav are the outright leaders of the Newport & District Pool League for the first time after sealing a famous 4-2 victory over NRBL A at Upper Bar on Wednesday night.
Pre-match banter between the league’s top two teams threatened to spiral out of control. Some players were so hyped up that NRBL’s Mick Beech and Antony Heathcote took an afternoon off work just to practice on the Upper Bar baize. The outright league lead and the bragging rights were at stake and NRBL A drew first blood, with Wayne Dodd silencing Andy Miles in a tight opening frame.
But Tavern landlord Ian Roberts had other ideas and he capitalised on a foul by Newport Open champion Colin Pink to seal an excellent clearance to level the score. Greg Heathcote never allowed Mick Beech to settle in rack three to make it 2-1 and, when Ben Longstaff got the better of an irate Antony Heathcote in rack four, the LSC had at least sealed a draw.
The home side managed to win the first doubles rack to seal the three points and the outright league lead, although Antony Heathcote salvaged some damaged pride for the NRBL in the final frame when Miles numptied a black into the middle pocket. “Wim Tav ay we,” joked a delighted LSC skipper Longstaff.
Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms were unable to capitalise on the NRBL A’s slip up and were subjected to a humiliating home defeat by the defending champions, the King’s Head A. “There’s a long way to go and we showed that we are back,” said a delighted Mick Collins, skipper of the King’s Head side. “Come on me babbies!”
Junction A did their title challenge no harm at all with a 5-1 home win over the Newport Arms Hotel but the Railway Tavern were held to a 3-3 draw by the in-form King’s Head B.
Adam Stone got the Railway off to a winning start against Chris Perry, but Maggie O’Brien and Lorna McPhee humiliated Petros Magosfalvi and Stuart Morrey to put the ladies into an unlikely lead. Greg Quinn got one over Lucy Hennessey to level the score and honours were shared in the doubles, with Lyn Day joining forces with Hennessey to grab at least a point for the ladies.
The Royal Navy Club subjected the Plough to a humiliating 1-5 defeat in Woodseaves and the in-form Wheatsheaf secured three points against Gnosall’s Horns at Chetwynd Aston to move up to the dizzy heights of third place.
Gnosall’s Navigation provided one of the upsets of the night with a 2-4 away win at the New Inn, but the result of the match between the NRBL B and the Junction B was not available as we closed for press.
Results should be sent as soon as possible after matches on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153.
Please note that all league fees (£40 per team) must be paid by the end of next week or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left for the attention of Neil Perkins at the Railway Tavern.
