NRBL A AND LSC AT THE TAV SET NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE PACE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A and LSC at the Tavern have overtaken Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms and are the pacesetters at the top of the Newport & District Pool League.

Both teams maintained their 100% start to the new season with excellent victories against difficult opponents. NRBL top the table on frame difference after demolishing the Junction A in Newport.

Antony Heathcote, Wayne Dodd, Newport open champion Colin Pink and Mick Beech did the damage in the singles racks against Sion Richards, Keith Rogers, Hyla Marklew and Steve Roycroft and there was no way back for the Norbury side in the doubles.

LSC at the Tav stunned the defending champions, King’s Head A, at Chetwynd End by emerging with a second successive victory against their old adversaries. Phil Emery put the home side 1-0 up after a tight frame with Ian Roberts, but Andy Miles and Greg Heathcote got the better of Graham Tigwell and Irene Whittington to put LSC ahead.

Ben Longstaff cited jetlag and a fluked black as two of the reasons for his narrow defeat to Ian Perry that levelled the score, but LSC were not to be denied. Longstaff and Heathcote bounced back to win frame five and Miles and Roberts won a tactical final frame against Tigwell and Eddie Keenan to seal all three points.

The Sutherland Arms were held to a shock 3-3 draw by the league newcomers, the Horns, who picked up their first point of the campaign and cost the Tibberton side the league lead in Gnosall.

Junction B dropped just one frame en route to beating King’s Head B in Norbury and the Wheatsheaf managed to snatch all three points in a 2-4 away win at the Royal Navy Club.

The Navigation gained their first three points of the season with a 4-2 victory over the Plough at Woodseaves and Newport Arms Hotel lost by a similar margin to NRBL B. The outcome of the match between the Railway Tavern and the New Inn had not been received as we closed for press.

Results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153.

Please note that all league fees (£40 per team) must be paid by the end of next week or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left for the attention of Neil Perkins at the Railway Tavern.
