SUTHY MAINTAIN 100% START TO NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE SEASON
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms are yet to drop a frame in this year’s Newport & District Pool League after beating the Royal Navy Club 6-0 in Tibberton. Tom Fisken, Matt Mansell, Gary Bolton and Jack Hooper did the damage for the home side to keep them at the top of the points’ standings.
LSC at the Tav kept up the pressure on the Sutherland with a second successive 5-1 victory, with the Horns on the receiving end on this occasion. Ian Roberts made a useful clearance to beat R. Holmes, Andy Miles beat S. Bullock, Greg Heathcote held his nerve to beat D. Smith and Ben Longstaff wrapped up the three points with a win over L. Bullock.
Miles and Roberts won a long frame against Smith and J. Anstey to make it 5-0, but Holmes and C. Minors prevailed in rack six against Heathcote and Longstaff to put the Horns on the score sheet.
NRBL A kept up their 100% start to the season by beating Newport Arms Hotel 6-0 at the Legion. Antony Heathcote, Mick Beech, Wayne Dodd and Colin Pink did the damage in the singles and the quartet joined forces to win both doubles racks, although Hannah Evans pushed Pink all the way in their singles encounter.
Defending champions King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw by Junction A at Norbury. Mick Collins put the visitors in front against Sion Richards, but Keith Rogers pipped Phil Emery to level the scores. Graham Tigwell again edged the King’s Head into the lead against Steve Roycroft and Hyla Marklew beat Irene Whittington to level the match at 2-2. The Junction hit the front in rack five, courtesy of Roycroft and Rogers, but Collins and Tigwell beat Richards and Marklew to seal the draw.
The King’s Head B held NRBL to an excellent 3-3 draw at Upper Bar. The Shakespeare have moved to the New Inn with immediate effect and got off to winning ways by beating Junction B with the loss of just one frame in Stafford Street.
The Railway Tavern claimed all three points in a 2-4 victory at the Plough at Woodseaves and, in the final match of the night, the Wheatsheaf secured a 5-1 win over Gnosall’s Navigation.
Results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153. Please note that all league fees (£40 per team) must be paid by the end of November or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left for the attention of Neil Perkins at the Railway Tavern.
