MARINA BAY (Singapore): While the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) hosts this weekend’s Oryx Cup World Championship in Doha Bay, a small contingent of staff have travelled to Singapore to support drivers Khalid Abdullah Al-Kuwari and Khalid Saleh Al-Shamlan in the brand new F1 H20 Nations Cup.
Under the management of Khalid Bin Arhama Al-Kuwari, head of formula racing at the QMSF, the Qatari duo will join 22 other drivers from a further nine countries to contest the first event of its kind in Singapore’s Marina Bay.
“Everyone arrived safely and the drivers have been resting and acclimatising to the time difference to make sure they are ready for the weekend,” said Khalid Bin Arhama Al-Kuwari, head of formula racing at the (QMSF), which runs under the presidency of His Excellency Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani.
“This is a superb venue. It is less than five minutes walking distance from the hotel and certainly a race location we would like to see in the F1 calendar in the future. Khalid (Al-Shamlan) has a good chance to win the Nations Cup and we will certainly be aiming for a top-five finish at the very least.”
Wong Seong Laurence and Larry Chua Wen Zheng will represent the host nation, Ahmed Al-Hameli and Majed Al-Mansoori will drive the Team Abu Dhabi boats and Mark Shepherd, Brett Stuart, Tim Featherstonhaugh and Bongani Ndesti are registered for Team South Africa.
Team Brunei is represented by Nordin bin Hj Mohammed and Ismail bin Hj Kabon, Risto and Mary Painio fly the Finnish flag, Roberto and Kane Fernandez and Hanif Borthan represent neighbouring Malaysia and Brazilians Lebos Chaguri and Paul Gaiser will also compete. Saudi Arabia’s Naeem Al-Kedawi and Saud Ahmed and Hungary’s Viktor and Komel Vo and Robert Hencz complete the 24-driver line-up.
Teams will be permitted two practice sessions on Friday and Saturday, followed by qualifying to finalise the line-up for Saturday afternoon’s match race.
There will be a third practice session on Sunday before the F1 H20 Nations Cup Singapore Grand Prix fires into life on Sunday afternoon.
