NEW NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE SET
TO START ON NOVEMBER 9TH

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The 2011-2012 Newport & District Pool League gets underway next Wednesday evening (November 9th), when 16 teams take to the baize for the start of the marathon 30-week league season that also incorporates the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy.

Joining defending cup and league champions, King’s Head A, are newcomers the Horns at Gnosall and a ladies team from the Newport Arms Hotel (Swan). Other changes to the line-up include the former Wheatsheaf B team moving across the town to become Newport Legion B and LSC at the Tav making the Railway Tavern their permanent home after playing half of last year at Lilleshall Sports Centre.

Newport Legion A’s clash with the defending champions is the pick of the first week’s fixtures, while the Horns entertain Norbury’s Junction A and the Swan girl’s team entertain their female rivals from King’s Head B. The Sutherland Arms, last year’s runners-up in both the cup and the league, face a tricky first match away at the Navigation in Gnosall.

Matches will start at the usual time of 20.30hrs and will be played over four singles and two doubles matches to old EPA rules. Players can only play for one team during a league season, but there is no limit to the number of players who can register for a team.

To clarify any confusion in connection with players’ talking during doubles matches, the rule is that partners can discuss each and every shot before the player with the cue actually visits the table. From that point onwards, no discussion can take place until that shot is completed. Failure to adhere to this rule may result in a foul being called.

Results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings latest to 07831 123153.

Please note that all league fees (£40 per team) must be paid by the end of November or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern.
