PERRY AND PINK SET FOR CARLING
NEWPORT POOL OPEN FINAL SHOWDOWN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Young Robert ‘Bobby’ Perry will meet Hinstock’s Colin Pink in next Wednesday evening’s final of the Carling Newport Pool Open at the Newport Legion.
Perry dropped the first frame in his semi-final match against Tibberton’s Wayne Dodd, but he bounced back with some quality potting to win the next three frames and surge into his first ever singles final. The victory means he will now miss a planned trip to Bruges in Belgium to watch Birmingham City in a Europa Cup tie.
With honours even after two scrappy opening frames, Dodd missed the black in rack three to go into a 2-1 lead and Perry cleared up. The fourth frame lasted for 30 minutes, with Perry prevailing after Dodd fouled, although Dodd was gracious in defeat and congratulated the youngster on his achievement.
Pink dropped the first frame to an inspired Russ Woodhouse kn his semi-final and could have been 2-0 up had he not gone in-off the black in the second frame. Pink regrouped, levelled the match and snatched the second rack to level the scores.
The former champion dominated frame three to move into the lead and, when Woodhouse’s pot on the yellow jawed in the corner pocket with just a black remaining, Pink turned on the safety play to gain two shots and that was enough to book his place in the final.
Pink and Market Drayton’s Mick Manning remained on course for a third successive Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open title with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Stafford’s Will Edge and Chris Broomhall.
Manning did the damage in a tight first frame to put the defending champions into the lead, but Broomhall made a stunning seven ball and black clearance in rack two to level the match. From then on it was one-way traffic, with Pink and Manning controlling proceedings to coast into the final.
They will meet the King’s Head’s Irene Whittington and Phil Emery in that final, after the surprise pairing won an absorbing contest against league team-mates Graham Tigwell and Ross Goodchild. Whittington and Emery won the first frame and then lost the next two, as Tigwell’s and Goodchild’s potting ability came into play.
The mixed doubles pair managed to level the match in the fourth and force a tiebreak frame. Tigwell had a chance to win the match, but his black ball miss teed up Emery and he took his chance to seize a place in the final.
Lauren Heathcote booked her place in the final of the second Newport Women’s Open with a 3-0 demolition of Sam Stewart-Frost at the King’s Head. The match was switched to the neutral venue at the 11th hour after a squabble over the match venue and Heathcote held her nerve to reach the final, where she will meet the defending champion Irene Whittington.
Finals’ night will take place at Newport Royal British Legion on Wednesday, October 19th. The club has confirmed that all beer on the night will be reduced to £2.20 per pint and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will also be served.
“I would like to think that all teams in the pool league and players and friends of those who have been involved in the competition will support finals’ night,” said tournament organiser Neil Perkins.
Action will begin with the Newport Women’s Open final on the main table in the centre of the large function room at 19.45hrs. The Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open final will follow at 20.30hrs approximately and the centrepiece Carling Newport Pool Open final will start around 21.45hrs.
The prize presentation and awarding of the trophies to the league winners and the ‘Desert England most improved player of the year’ trophy will wrap up proceedings.
