PERRY AND PINK REACH CARLING
NEWPORT POOL OPEN SEMI-FINALS
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Hinstock’s Colin Pink and Newport’s Robert Perry joined Russ Woodhouse and Wayne Dodd in the semi-finals of the Carling Newport Pool Open on Sunday night. Pink faces Woodhouse and Perry will take on Dodd in the two matches this week at neutral venues in the Newport area.
Perry was taken to five frames by former champion Antony Heathcote. He won the first nip and tuck encounter and Heathcote cleared well to level the match in rack two. Heathcote moved ahead with some useful safety play in frame three and had a chance to seal the match in the fourth, only to see Perry draw level with a brave clearance.
Perry won the crucial toss for break in the deciding frame and it was the turning point. He potted balls of both colours, but went on to hold his nerve and clear the table without giving Heathcote a look-in. Perry punched the air in delight and is now one game away from having to forfeit a two-day trip to Bruges to watch Birmingham City in a Europa Cup tie because of a date clash with finals’ night at the NRBL on Wednesday, October 19th.
Pink had an easier passage into the last four against tournament organiser Neil Perkins. The latter appeared to have the upper hand in a tense opening frame, but he left one safety shot a little loose and Pink stepped up to make a five-ball clearance to take the frame.
It was a similar story in rack two with cagey play for position dominating proceedings. It was nip and tuck until Perkins failed to leave Pink in a tight snooker in the corner and the former champion seized his chance to clear the table from a difficult position. Growing in confidence, Pink was on top in frame three and, when Perkins failed to get out of a difficult snooker, Pink used the two shots to perfection to master a six-ball clearance and keep his hopes of reaching a third final in six years alive.
Stafford’s involvement in the Carling Newport Pool Open ended when Neil Dale was shown the exit door by Wayne Dodd in four frames at Newport Legion. The fishery owner was always in the match, but Dodd produced some useful pool to book his place in the last four.
Phil Emery and Irene Whittington prevailed in a hard-fought quarterfinal doubles match against Andy Potter and Dave Marshall. The victors won the first frame, only to be pegged back in frame two. Emery and Whittington again won frame three and the match went to a tie-breaker after some useful safety play by Marshall and Potter.
Potter had a chance to clear in the fifth rack, but he left a ball short of the pocket and Emery stepped up to book a semi-final clash against fellow King’s Head players Ross Goodchild and Graham Tigwell.
They earned their place in the last four after a shock 0-3 away win against Tom Fisken and Warren Lewis at the Sutherland Arms in Tibberton. Tigwell was the star of the show, the King’s Head league player winning one frame from a seven-ball clearance off the break.
