NEWPORT’S IRENE WHITTINGTON EYES HISTORIC POOL TREBLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Not content with trying to defend her inaugural Newport Women’s Pool Open title, King’s Head league player Irene Whittington is eyeing an historic treble in this year’s Newport Pool Open.

The British Telecom employee beat Woodseaves-based Vicky Hipkins in three straight frames to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s Open again on Sunday and now faces Lorna McPhee in the semi-final later this month.

She has also reached the last 16 of the Carling Newport Pool Open and young Bob Perry stands in the way of Whittington reaching the quarterfinal of the prestigious singles’ competition. To keep the unlikely treble going, ‘Ice’ teamed up with Phil Emery to defeat Mike and Luke Jones, 3-1, in the last 16 of the Worthington’s Newport Doubles competition and they now face the Shakespeare’s Andy Potter and Dave Marshall in a doubles quarterfinal.

Tom Fisken and Warren Lewis also booked their place in the last eight of the doubles competition, after defeating Tibberton team-mates Matt Mansell and Wayne Dodd in four frames at the Sutherland Arms last week.

Fisken and Lewis will now take on the King’s Head’s Ross Goodchild and Graham Tigwell, who coasted to a 3-0 victory over Tom Sayce and Liam Matthews in a last 16 clash at the Wheatsheaf last Friday.

Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153 with the names of both players and the score clearly stated. The latest matches should be played by Tuesday, September 27th.
