COOL HAND LUKE DEFEATS JACK JONES IN NEWPORT OPEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): ‘Cool hand’ Luke Jones defeated his Wheatsheaf league team mate Jack Jones to complete the line-up for the last 16 of the Carling Newport Pool Open competition. But the week’s drama revolved around a couple of matches in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open.

Mick Beech and Ant Heathcote were strongly fancied to stroll through their last 16 encounter against Nigel Sandbrook and Mark Hodskinson at NRBL last Sunday. But the Wheatsheaf duo had other ideas. The home side moved into a 1-0 lead, but were pegged back by some dogged play by the Chetwynd Aston pair, who stunned their rivals by taking the next two frames. Beech and Heathcote hit back to level the match and Beech held his nerve in the decider to ensure that his chance of a piece of silverware remained intact.

The match between Andy Potter/Dave Marshall and Will Dorsett/Andy Miles also went to a tiebreak frame. Miles raced out of the blocks to pot six balls in frame one, but was unable to pot the black and the Shakespeare duo somehow clawed their way back into the frame to take the lead. Potter and Marshall made it 2-0 soon afterwards and Miles and Dorsett were up against it.

Miles managed a superb clearance in frame three to keep the LSC duo’s hopes alive and he went even better in the fourth frame to clear all eight balls in one visit after Potter had broke off and potted nothing. Marshall broke in the decider and potted nothing and Miles downed four reds, but left himself snookered behind the black. After a period of close play, Potter managed to pot his final yellow and left a simple black to seal the tense match for the Lilleshall cricketing duo.

Sam Stewart-Frost stunned Laura Brennan in three straight frames to progress to the semi-finals of the Newport Women’s Open and Lorna McPhee also booked her place in the last four with a 3-1 win over Lucy Hennessey at the King’s Head. The pair join Lauren Heathcote and the winner of the Irene Whittington/Vicky Hipkins clash in the semi-finals.
