GOODCHILD WINS INAUGURAL FOX CARP FESTIVAL

NEWPORT (SHROPSHIRE): Specimen fish were conspicuous by their absence at the inaugural private Fox Fishery syndicate’s carp festival, near Newport, last weekend.

Ross Goodchild made an excellent start to the 24-hour carp match and bagged a 10.12 mirror carp and a 16.0 common carp off peg 12 early on. Little did he know that this would be his lot for the match, but his 26.12 total was enough to win the contest.

Neil Perkins lost a good carp in the first two hours and then had to wait until darkness fell to bag a 13.9 mirror and a 6.3 common off peg two to snatch second place with 19.12. Cannock’s Rob Brown caught a 16.0 wels catfish off peg 14 in the first three hours in broad daylight and that was sufficient to take third place after the fish switched off the feed right across the reservoir.

Alan ‘Noddy’ Talbot finished fourth with a 10oz tench off peg 10 and Norbert Varady rued losing a good carp in the dead of night. Telford’s Gordon MacKay, Ben Longstaff and Derek Longstaff failed to register a single bite and dry nets were the result.
