FORMER CHAMPION PINK SAFELY INTO LAST 16 OF POOL OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Former champion Colin Pink was the first player to win a second round singles match in the 2011 Carling Newport Pool Open and progress to the last 16.
The Hinstock player was in good form to beat Jason Taphouse in straight frames at the Railway Tavern on Monday night, although Taphouse will be kicking himself for failing to capitalise on a rare Pink error by fouling on the black himself in the third frame.
Stafford’s Chris Broomfield and Will Edge survived their first round Worthington’s Doubles match by the skin of their teeth. Broomfield could only watch in agony as he jawed the final black in the tie-break frame against former champions, Ian and Bob Perry, but Perry Junior was unable to clear his final three balls and Edge had an easy tap in to win the tie.
The duo then played Al-Harvey and Paul Skitt in their second round match the same evening. But the Wheatsheaf duo were never at the races and Warrington-based Broomfield and Edge proceeded to the last eight in three frames.
Earlier that evening, Skitt and Harvey had survived a first round scare against Kim Rigby and Lauren Heathcote. The girls came back from 0-2 down, only to lose the final frame tiebreak.
Tom Sayce and Liam Matthews stunned Telford’s Luke and Charlie Hayward in four frames, while Paul Trevor and John Williams left it until the 11th hour to play Antony Heathcote and Mick Beech in their first round grudge match. Heathcote and Beech strolled into a 2-0 lead, but were pegged back by the snooker players after missing a chance to complete the whitewash. They regrouped in rack five to send a disgruntled Trevor home with his tail firmly between his legs.
Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153 with the names of both players and the score clearly stated. Second round matches must be played by Tuesday, August 30th.
