HEATHCOTE EDGES MILES IN FIVE-FRAME POOL OPEN THRILLER
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Former Newport Pool Open champion Antony Heathcote overcame his inner demons and immense pressure from Andy Miles to win his first round match of the 2011 Carling Newport Pool Open in a tie-break fifth frame.
Heathcote edged into a 1-0 lead and had a black for a seven-ball clearance in rack two to make it 2-0. But he missed the pot and Miles duly cleared the table to level the match. The next three frames were nip and tuck with Heathcote managing to hold his nerve at the death to seal a place in the second round.
His brother Greg Heathcote overcame an out-of-sorts Mike Jones in straight frames in their first round clash at the NRBL and Luke Jones survived a bout of jitters against Mark Hodskinson to proceed to round two. Open organiser Neil Perkins dropped the second frame in a tight four-rack tussle with Russ Goodchild at the King’s Head.
Ed Keenan made light work of Neil Haseley to reach round two in three frames, but defending champion Mick Collins stumbled past Stu Morrey in four frames, after his opponent had twice squandered golden opportunities to seal frames and fouled in the process.
Fireman Dave Marshall had all guns blazing to oust Tom Sayce in three frames, while Tavern landlord Ian Roberts lost a 2-1 lead to Stafford’s Will Edge and succumbed in the tie-break frame.
Jack Jones blamed a Shrewsbury hangover for his play in the opening two racks against a recovering Kim Rigby. But Jones managed to sweat his way through the next three frames to seal a nervous victory in five racks. A dejected Ben Clews threatened retirement from the sport after losing 2-3 to Stafford’s Chris Broomhall and snooker player Jason Taphouse was too much for an out-of-sorts Graham Tigwell in a 0-3 win at the King’s Head.
Mick Beech glided into a 1-0 lead against Ben Longstaff on Monday night, but Longstaff hit back with a useful clearance in frame two to level the scores and Beech’s own demons got the better of him from then on, with his opponent benefiting from two slack shots to take the next two frames.
Ian Roberts and Steve Morrey wasted no time in getting the better of Lyn Day and Chris Perry in their first round Worthington’s Doubles Open match and Neil ‘Hurricane’ Haseley and Dave Price squandered a couple of chances to get back into a match they eventually lost in straight frames to the Wheatsheaf’s Mark Hodskinson and Nigel Sandbrook.
Andy Miles and Will Dorsett were made to work hard for a 3-1 victory over Trevor Smith and Paul Burton. The LSC players found themselves in a 2-0 lead, but Burton hit back with a useful clearance to pull a frame out of the bag, only for a cruel in-off to cost him a chance of levelling the match in frame four.
Graham Tigwell and Ross Goodchild potted all five blacks in their 3-2 victory over Andy Lycett and Jack Jones at the Shakespeare. The first two cost the pair both frames, because they were foul shots, but the King’s Head duo struck back to win the next three and secure the match.
