ROGERS, DALE AND EVANS SAFELY INTO
NEWPORT POOL OPEN SECOND ROUND DRAW

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Cannock’s Keith Rogers, Stafford-based fishery owner Neil Dale, Whitchurch’s Cyril Evans and Tibberton’s Matt Mansell were just four of the players to triumph in their first round matches and make round two of the prestigious 2011 Carling Newport Pool Open.

Rogers dropped one frame on the way to victory over Paul ‘Morrissey’ Burton, Dale whitewashed Ross Richards-Jones and Evans managed to beat his friend and doubles partner Brian Sumner in four frames in Whitchurch.

Defending ladies’ champion Irene Whittington came back from 0-2 down to defeat Russ Porter at the Railway Tavern, Matt Mansell dropped the first frame on his way to beating the Wheatsheaf’s Nigel Sandbrook and Bob Perry sailed passed King’s Head colleague Jamie James in three frames.

Luke Hayward was left to regret costly black ball misses in his first round exit against an in-form Trevor Smith and Greg Quinn lost to Wayne Dodd in a nail biting tie-break frame where Dodd benefited from a penultimate ball fluke to seal his place in round two.

Mick Collins and Ed Keenan were taken to a fifth frame in their first round Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open clash with Ben Longstaff and Greg Heathcote. A controversial missed foul threatened to mar proceedings in frame four, but the King’s Head duo prevailed in a tense final frame after the LSC pair had twice come back from a frame down.

Mike and Luke Jones stunned Ben Clews and Gary Bolton in four frames to book their place in the second round of the doubles’ competition. Newport’s Ashley Vaughan and Neil Perkins benefited from a Stu Morrey in-off on the black to take a 1-0 lead against Morrey and Russ Porter, but useful clearances by Vaughan and Perkins in the next two racks kept a raucous crowd entertained in a rapid-fire encounter at the Railway Tavern.

Earlier the same evening, Tom Fisken and Warren Lewis made light work of beating Greg Quinn and Adam Stone in straight frames and defending champions, Colin Pink and Mick Manning, defeated last year’s beaten finalists, Cyril Evans and Brian Sumner, without the loss of a frame.

Laura Brennan stunned tournament second favourite Lyn Day to proceed to the quarterfinals of the Newport Ladies’ Open. The Shakespeare cue dropped just one frame in an excellent win. Lauren Heathcote also did the Shakespeare team proud: the sister of the 2008 Newport Open Champion defeated Chris Perry in straight frames to book her place in the last eight.

First round matches in all three competitions must be finished by next Tuesday (August 2nd) unless prior agreement has been approved.

Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153 with the names of both players and the score clearly stated. All outstanding entry fees must also be paid by this weekend or offending players will be excluded from the tournament.
