JUNCTION A CONFIRM FOURTH PLACE
AT END OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Newport & District Pool League finished with the Junction A confirming fourth position behind the triumphant King’s Head A, runners-up Sutherland Arms at Tibberton and third-placed NRBL.
The Norbury side beat Gnosall’s Navigation, 5-1, to ensure that they stayed in front of LSC at the Tav in the final points’ standings.
Shakespeare C drew 3-3 with the Railway Tavern in a re-arranged match on Wednesday teatime and then had to rely on their neighbours to defeat LSC at the Tav later in the evening to give them a chance of taking fifth position.
The Tavern dismissed their stable mates in record time, with Greg Quinn, Russ Porter, Adam Stone and Stu Morrey sealing the match in the singles frames. LSC did pull two doubles racks back, but slipped to sixth when news filtered through that the Shakespeare C had earned a shock 2-4 win over the league champions.
It was a night of upsets, with the Junction B silencing the Sutherland Arms by a similar score line and the King’s Head B finishing the season in style by beating the Plough at Woodseaves with the loss of one frame.
Honours were shared in the clash between the Wheatsheaf A and the Royal Navy Club, but NRBL dropped just one frame against the Wheatsheaf B. Mick Beech beat Tom Sayce to set the home side on their way, but Jack Jones redressed the balance against Ant Heathcote to level the score. There was no stopping Colin Farge and Colin Pink in racks three and four and the home side prevailed in the doubles racks to seal the match.
The Shakespeare B were unable to field a side against their A team and forfeited the match.
The first round of the Carling Newport Pool Open is now underway, but results from players who have not paid their entry fees by the cut off for the first round will not be accepted. First round matches must be played by August 2nd.
