DOLAN TURNS UP THE HEAT TO WIN MERRINGTON OPEN

NEWPORT (SHROPSHIRE): Gordon Dolan overcame the onset of high pressure, a strong side wind and hot weather to snatch victory in the new Kingfisher Angling Club’s five-hour match at Merrington fishery, near Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury.

The Newport rod, a member of the King’s Head Fishing Society, used a pole to the far bank of the small match lake to bag 13lb 8oz of small carp on meat and corn.
King’s Head landlord Mick Collins used similar tactics to land 10lb 8oz of carp for second place. Owen Rigby used rod tactics to catch smaller roach, rudd and carp to snatch third from the corner peg with 7lb 10oz. Neil Perkins used an 18ft match rod to net a mixed bag of skimmers, roach, rudd and smaller carp to claim fourth with 6lbs 8oz.

Sixth-placed Ross Goodchild arranged numerous prizes through a sponsored carp fishing colleague, with carp bait and equipment awarded to the top five.

Results: 1. Gordon Dolan 13lb 8oz (carp on meat and corn); 2. Mick Collins 10lb 8oz; 3. Owen Rigby 7lb 10oz; 4. Neil Perkins 6lb 8oz; 5. Steve Harrison 3lb 1oz, 6. Ross Goodchild 3lb 0oz, 7. Ian Perry, 1lb 15oz, etc.
