SUTHERLAND ARMS KEEP UP THE PRESSURE ON KING’S HEAD A
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms kept up the pressure on Newport & District Pool League leaders King’s Head A by beating LSC at the Tav by the odd frame in a tense match at Upper Bar on Wednesday night.
Mick Collins’s league leaders made short work of beating the Shakespeare B next door, with Collins, Jamie James, Irene Whittington and birthday boy Ian Perry sealing the three points in the singles racks. Graeme Tigwell joined the King’s Head fiesta in the fifth rack to keep the Chetwynd End side on course for a maiden title.
Tom Fisken’s ‘Suthy’ were made to work much harder for their three points at the Railway Tavern by LSC. Fisken had the better start against Greg Heathcote in frame one but the youngster fought his way back into contention, only to miss a straight black into the corner and hand the visitors a priceless advantage.
Matt Mansell potted his final yellow from an outrageous snooker to defeat Neil Perkins in a tense second rack and put the visitors into a 2-0 lead, but a superb double by Ben Longstaff gave the home side hope in frame three. Andy Miles ground out a useful clearance to pip Wayne Dodd and level the match in the fourth frame, but the Tibberton side prevailed in the doubles.
An unforced Longstaff error gifted Fisken and Colin Smith two shots in rack five, with Fisken clearing the table, and Mansell and Dodd kept their cool against Miles and Ian Roberts to seal the three points in a tense final frame.
NRBL benefited from LSC’s demise to extend their grip on third place to five points after beating the Plough, 2-4, in Woodseaves. Mick Beech set the defending champions on their way against James Morris, but Tony Morris levelled the score against Colin Farge. Vicki Winter humiliated former Newport Open champion Antony Heathcote to give the home side the chance of an upset, but Colin Pink restored the Legion’s faith with victory over Vicky Hipkins.
Pink and Farge and Beech and Heathcote produced some better form to clinch both doubles racks and all three points for the Newport side. “Wim trying as hard as we can ay we,” said NRBL skipper Beech.
Neither the Wheatsheaf B nor the Junction A were able to capitalise on LSC’s demise after a 3-3 draw at Chetwynd Aston. Liam Matthews put Sarah Smalman-Murase’s side in front against Sion Richards, but Keith Rogers and Hyla Marklew stunned Dave Haynes and Jack Jones to put the Norbury side back in the driving seat. Tom Sayce relaxed ‘Sheaf nerves by levelling the match against Steve Roycroft.
Honours were shared in the doubles: Rogers and Roycroft sealed frame five, but Matthews and Sayce prevailed in the final game to earn each side a point.
The Railway Tavern returned to form by beating the Royal Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard. Greg Quinn and David Bristow put the visitors into a 0-2 lead. Gerry Nunn silenced Adam Stone to give the veterans hope, but Stu Morrey confirmed at least a draw for the away side against Jez Price. Nunn and Mark Kijuk put the home team in sight of a point in rack five, only for Adam Stone and Quinn to seal the match for the Tavern in the final frame.
The Wheatsheaf A left Norbury Junction with three points after beating the Staffordshire side’s B team by the odd frame. The Shakespeare A maintained a useful run of form by demolishing the King’s Head B at Chetwynd End, but the match between the Shakespeare C and the Navigation at Gnosall was postponed.
