KING’S HEAD A MARCH ON AS SHAKE C FLOUNDER

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A edged ever closer to a first Newport & District Pool League title on a night where the over-confident Shakespeare C were brought firmly down to the ground by the Upper Bar venue’s all-female B team.

Mick Collins’s Chetwynd End side dropped one frame on the way to a 5-1 win over the Junction B, but Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms kept up the pressure at the top of the league table and maintained a gap of four points, despite dropping two frames in a 4-2 win over the Plough at Woodseaves.

Ben Clewes’s Shakespeare C threw away a golden chance to draw level with LSC at the Tav in fourth place, after being held to that shock 3-3 draw by their B team. Clewes put the home side into a 1-0 lead by beating Lauren Heathcote, but Sam Frost stunned Gary Bolton to level the match. Jason Lloyd put the C team back on track against Hannah Evans, only for Kim Rigby to beat Craig Parnham and send the match into the doubles racks level.

Bolton and Lloyd prevailed in frame five to put Clewes’s side in sight of the chequered flag, but Rigby and Heathcote played superbly to shut down a nervous Clewes and a hapless Parnham to seal a stunning draw.

The NRBL edged two points clear in third position after dropping just one frame in a 1-5 win at the Railway Tavern. Greg Quinn beat Colin Farge to give Legion hearts a few flutters, but Mick Beech pipped Stu Morrey and Antony Heathcote returned to winning ways after six weeks in the icy wilderness to make it 1-2. Colin Pink returned to the side to slaughter Adam ‘The Beast’ Stone and the NRBL showed no mercy in the doubles racks to seal an emphatic win.

LSC at the Tav were unable to stay level with the NRBL in third after being held to a tense 3-3 draw at Shakespeare A. Andy Potter somehow turned the first frame in his favour against Ian Roberts to set the home side on their way, but Greg Heathcote dug deep against Dan Brennan to level the match.

Neil Perkins held his nerve in a marathon third frame against Dave Marshall to put the visitors in sight of at least a draw, but Ross Richards-Jones played well to beat Andy Miles and level the score. Longstaff and Heathcote edged a tight fifth frame against Potter and Ben Holmes to put LSC 2-3 in front, but Marshall was gifted a chance to level the contest in frame six after Miles, Roberts and Richards-Jones had all wilted under the pressure.

Mike Jones’s Wheatsheaf B were unable to close the gap on LSC after being held to a 3-3 draw by the Chetwynd Aston pub’s A team. Hyla Marklew’s Junction A were the main beneficiaries and surged into sixth after beating the King’s Head B, 5-1, Keith Rogers and Steve Horton losing one of the doubles racks to the league’s bottom side.

Honours were shared in the clash between the Royal Navy Club and Gnosall’s Navigation.
