KING’S HEAD A EDGE CLEAR AS SUTHY DRAW WITH NRBL

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head A extended their lead in the Newport & District Pool League to four points on a night where the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton were held to a 3-3 draw by the NRBL and the flying LSC at the Tav climbed to equal third in the table.

Mick Collins’s league leaders were made to work for their three points against the in-form Wheatsheaf B. Collins, Graham Tigwell and Irene Whittington beat Mike Jones, Tom Sayce and Jack Jones to make it 3-0 to the visitors and Jamie James returned to the first team to beat Luke Jones and seal the three points. The home side bounced back in the doubles racks to restore some pride but slipped to sixth in the table.

The Sutherland Arms lost ground on the leaders after being held to a 3-3 draw by the NRBL in Newport. Colin Farge had a quick fire win over Colin Smith to set the defending champions on their way and Luke Hayward triumphed over Tom Fisken in a tense safety-dominated second frame to make it 2-0.

Matt Mansell survived an endurance third frame over Antony Heathcote to make it 1-2 to the visitors, but the NRBL were not to be denied after Wayne Dood had redressed the balance in fine form and Mick Beech eventually sealed a vital point for the Legion team in the final frame to keep them ahead of LSC at the Tav in third place on frame difference.

LSC were made to work hard for three points against the in-form Junction A. Ian Roberts squeezed past Sion Richards to put the Newport team into the lead, but Keith Rogers levelled the match against an out-of-sorts Greg Heathcote. Hyla Marklew escaped from five snookers to pip Neil Perkins in a black ball third frame to put the Junction into the lead, only for Andy Miles to tie the match in a tense rack against Steve ‘Steady’ Roycroft.

Perkins teamed up with Heathcote and redeemed himself for a straight black ball miss in the singles to put the home side into a 3-2 lead with a useful clearance in frame five against Richards and Marklew. Miles partnered Roberts to seal the match for the home side against Rogers and Roycroft in a tight final frame.

Ben Clewes’s Shakespeare C side kept up the pressure on NRBL and LSC for third place with a tense 4-2 win over Junction B. A shell-shocked Jason Orange was on the wrong end of his first seven-ball clearance for the Upper Bar side, but Clewes and company prevailed in the final frame to seal three tense points for the Newport outfit at Norbury.

The Shakespeare A prepared for their crunch showdown with LSC next week by demolishing the Plough at Woodseaves. Andy Potter, Dave Marshall, Laura Brennan and Ross Richards-Jones beat Vicki Winter, Tony Morris, Kirk Robinson and Vicky Hopkins in the singles racks and there was no way back for the Staffordshire side in the doubles frames, with Ben Holmes joining the rout alongside Jones in frame five.

The Navigation sent the Railway Tavern packing with a 4-2 win in Gnosall and the Wheatsheaf A cruised passed the King’s Head B, despite dropping one frame. Honours were shared in the bottom of the table clash between the Shakespeare B and the Royal Navy Club at Upper Bar.
