MOLSON COORS SET TO SUPPORT
NEWPORT POOL OPEN FOR FIFTH YEAR

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Molson Coors have agreed to support the 2011 Carling Newport Pool Open and the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open for a fifth year.

Series promoter Neil Perkins of NDP Publicity Services will also run a Women’s Open for a second successive season and a local beauty salon is currently being sought to provide a full makeover for the winner. The Newport Pool Open was established by Perkins in 2006 and has grown in stature each year.

Entries for all three competitions open this week and will close on Saturday, July 9th, with flyers and entry forms already being sent out to numerous pool-playing club and public house in the Newport, Woodseaves, Hinstock, Market Drayton, Stafford, Norbury, Gnosall and surrounding areas. Anyone can enter provided that home matches are played within a seven-mile radius of Newport.

“We are delighted to support the Carling Newport Open and the Worthington’s Doubles competition,” said Caroline King, account manager at Molson Coors (UK) Brewers Ltd. “Pool is extremely well supported in the Newport area and this competition grows every year.”

The Newport Pool League has been a resounding success this season with a capacity 16 teams and event organisers are hopeful that all registered players will support the singles, doubles and women’s competitions, in addition to new players and individuals who have not played league pool this year.

Rules are the same as previous years and the final prize fund will depend upon numbers entering each competition.

Entry for the 2011 Carling Newport Open singles competition will be £10, £10 per pair for the Worthington’s doubles competition and £5 per player to the Newport Women’s Open.

The draw for first round matches will be made on Monday, July 11th and there will be around 18 days for each round of matches to be completed. Each match will be played over the best of five frames.

Home drawn players will again be permitted to choose the venue and away players will need to contact them to arrange the mutually convenient date and time of the fixture. Finals’ night will takes place at the Newport Royal British Legion on Wednesday, October 19th.

“It was like a dream for me to win the first Newport Open,” insists local snooker player Paul Trevor, the 2006 champion.

Hinstock’s Colin Pink won in 2007, Newport’s Anthony Heathcote etched his name on the trophy in 2008 but lost out to Stafford’s Brendan Ruttledge in a tense final the following year. Mick Collins made up for the disappointment of losing the 2008 final by beating Pink in 2010.

Market Drayton’s Mick Manning and Colin Pink are the defending Worthington’s Newport Doubles champions and Newport’s Irene Whittington beat Lyn Day to win the inaugural Newport Women’s Open in 2010.
